Let us recap. What were the objectives of the New Economic Policy of 1971? Were they not the eradication of poverty, and the restructuring of society?
I would implore all Malaysians especially of the Umno breed who have not been trained (or is it allowed?) to ask intelligent questions (as opposed to the Badaruldin type) to get a copy, (you can even download it for free) of the Malaysian Economic Agenda, read it, digest it and yes, of course, if there are questions and doubts, ask. Rest assured, no one will be sent to Kamunting for asking those questions.
In summary, the NEP was, (at the time it was thought out) a noble and well-intended instrument towards achieving the above-mentioned objectives. And it was, in fact, striving towards those objectives with the Malays (or bumiputeras, depending on who is talking) being the main beneficiary of the affirmative action implemented. By default, they were the main target group.
I am unsure if they still are (the main target group) today and am not about to indulge in any argument, for or against. However, many Malaysians of sane mind know for a fact that, almost 40 years down the road, the NEP (as we knew it) had been mutilated beyond recognition.
The NEP had instead been used as an instrument to not only justify, but legitimise endemic corruption and cronyism. If at all it was meant to help the bumiputeras, the reality is, it is meant only for the Umnoputras.
As an example, a project for the rakyat, which does not require state funding, was blocked (by that state’s exco) simply because on the board of the holding company that submitted the proposal, there sat a prominent PAS member!
I implore Malaysians (especially Melayus like me) to read the Malaysian Economic Agenda, with a clear and open mind. Believe me, you will finally realise that it is no different in its objectives than the 1971 NEP.
One ‘difference’ stands out, ie, the emphasis now is on justice. The affirmative action remains, albeit it will now be on the basis of need as opposed to greed! Surely that cannot be at all bad?
