Now, with the former opposition gaining lots of ground in the recent elections, there seems to be more strident calls for greater Indian representation and for what is euphemistically called ‘sensitivity’ in temple demolitions.

I am an Indian Malaysian and want the community to be counted on positively. I do not feel that Indians must be at Deputy CM levels at all states for instance. Dr Ramasamy in Penang appears to have the credentials to be one but that is on perceived abilities and that should be the basis of selection.

There should be no need, for say, state exco posts to be given to any race except on abilities. And there is no need for a representative to be from a particular race to take care of that race. This is Malaysia and any Malaysian govt that marginalises any Malaysian should and will be booted out as shown recently. Having race-based reps for communities only polarises government policy formulations.

Now on to Hindu temples. Even the Indians must admit that we simply have too many and that too usually at road junctions and other strategic locations. We Indians must ourselves formulate a policy to limit the numbers to manageable levels and locations before they cause resentment to others.

Why the smallest, possibly least homogenous race group in Malaysia, needs so many temples must be examined by eminent Indians themselves. Temples should unite. How so many temples could unite so few Indian Hindus must be a mystery to all.

I invite all concerned Malaysians to join me to give your thoughts on this matter as some parties will deem it too ‘sensitive’ to discuss openly.
