Firecrackers: lifting ban makes better sense

The time has come for the government to consider lifting the import ban on firecrackers since it has not been successful in preventing the smuggling of the contraband. The strong demand for it, especially during Chinese New Year has only benefitted the smugglers and illegal distributors.

It would be better to allow for its legal entry into the country and impose a tax on the firecrackers. The tax revenues (on firecrackers) should be used to tackle more pressing issues such as illegal immigration, the rising crime rate, drug smuggling and so on.

By legalising firecrackers the authorities can regulate their use, such as setting the maximum number of decibels firecrackers can emit, when and where they can be let off and issuing safety guidelines.

Fire crackers are only a minor nuisance as they are let off for only a few days in a year and most of the accidents (which are very few) are caused by mishandling or from homemade versions. Modified motorcycle exhausts cause more noise pollution then fire crackers. Ear plugs and the installation of casement windows can help dampen (muffle) the noise of fire crackers.

During CNY, the long burning giant joss sticks produce more hazardous smoke pollution then fire crackers and this should be looked into by the authorities. With proper planning, the tradition of playing firecrackers during Chinese New Year can be developed into a tourism product.

Independence day, new year days and festivals around the world would become dull affairs without the cacophony of exploding firecrackers and the vibrant colours of fireworks making patterns in the night sky.
