My father was a police officer in the 1970s in Penang, and while I salute the police for tackling many crime cases, I am getting more and more angered by their bias in matters relating to political security. It is a shame. It is dishonourable. It is also a great betrayal of people and taxpayers' trust.
I refer of course to the ISA cases and many similar ones involving the police top officers meddling into party politics. When Ibrahim Ali and his Malay Action Front (MAF) organised racist meetings and spreading racist propaganda using a symbol of violence, the police closed one eye. However, it shamelessly accused peaceful reformasi organisers of planning violence and riots. How can we trust the police anymore?
The police is subject to control of the Home Minister yet he said he did not know of the ISA arrests of the seven Malaysians. Is that a police coup d'etat against the civilian government?
In Indonesia, it was the military (Abri). In Malaysia, it is the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM). They all meddle into civilian politics and subvert democracy. It is time for the police force to reform. As Abri is slowly put back into barracks, it is time for Malaysia to put back PDRM in its proper place.
Inspector-General of Police Norian Mai should resign and PDRM must be reformed thoroughly and fundamentally to restore its credibility and honour.
If nothing is done to this effect, my whole family will vote for Barisan Alternatif and politicians standing for reformasi. Enough is enough!
