Recently we hear a lot of S Samy Vellu, making demands to the government, demanding for this, demanding for that and more. He had been a minister for almost 26 years but while he was a minister, no such demands were ever made or were such statements issued to the Press. Maybe the pleasure of being a minister made him to keep his mouth closed and enjoy the ‘benefits’.

Then came March 8. Samy Vellu who could not do anything for the Indians and gave in to the government all these years could not even retain his seat which was a safe seat for him for years. The government, meanwhile, not only lost five states but also lost its two-thirds majority in Parliament.

It is no point for Samy Vellu to now cry over spilled milk; he may never get a chance to redeem his honour or even win back his seat. Even if he can, the next elections are due only in 2013 by which time the PKR state governments may have proved their worth. MIC may even lose their remaining seats.

It is likely that MIC may even fade away if the opposition Indian MPs do well and serve the Indian community. It is too late for Samy Vellu now. Issuing press statements calling on the government to honour its promises to the Indians and making demands will not woo back the Indians to his side anymore. He is just making a laughing stock of himself.

If he had actually wanted to help the Indians, he should not have waited for so long. If he had known Barisan was not going to help the Indians, he should have withdrawn from the Barisan years ago. Maybe that would have prompted Barisan to, at least, give something to the Indians.

But then, he was a senior leader and a cabinet minister who was flying high - he would have never dreamt that he would fall one day. So he enjoyed the benefits and made money for himself. To hell with the Indians.

He lost a great opportunity but even so, it is not too late for Samy Vellu. He can create another tsunami within the Barisan. Samy Vellu should, since he is no more a minister, take MIC out from BN .

As far as he is concerned, he has nothing to lose and since the Indians have never obtained anything so far, they too have nothing to lose. Samy Vellu has every thing to gain from such a move and oh yes, he may even redeem his honour and the Indians may even support him again.

Will Samy Vellu do that? I dare him.
