I refer to the Malaysiakini report Anwar was 'very cold' towards me .
Ezam is on the offensive against Anwar Ibrahim to gain support and possibly to build his own power base within Umno. He is attacking Anwar for being a political chameleon. From the recent general elections, a significant proportion of the Malay electorate voted for Pakatan Rakyat. I really hope that more Malays would subscribe to a multi-racial Malaysia and the creation of a Bangsa Malaysia, where Malaysians are not divided by race, religion and skin colour.
It will take time and I hope it will come sooner rather than later. Pakatan Rakyat has already said they are colour and race-blind when it comes to helping the Malaysian poor. In that case, no Malays will be left behind.
The major political ideology adopted by Pakatan Rakyat that all Malaysians are equal and that Malaysia should help the poor regardless of race is an ideology that will create a more unified, stable, peaceful and prosperous Malaysia. As many of the poor are the Malays, the Malays cannot lose out. History has shown that upholding equality of race should be the norm rather than the exception. Countries that had practiced preferential treatments for a certain race will never be as stable and prosperous.
We can see this in South Africa (which in the past practiced apartheid), the US (which came to its senses and recognised the equality and quality of African-Americans) and Zimbabwe (which is in deep trouble today due to its racial policies) etc. I do hope that Pakatan Rakyat will remain committed to this multi-racial ideology that all Malaysians are equal. Under this ideology, Malaysia undoubtedly has better times ahead. We will see more Malaysians embracing one another (physically regardless of race!) and we will see a more progressive Malaysia that will be the envy of all nations.
On Anwar changing his position from time to time as stated by Ezam, the Malaysian electorate knows this. The Malaysia electorate will gravitate towards the leader who has recognised his past mistakes and is able to change for the better. So the Malaysians electorate will vote for Anwar even though his position in the past does not coincide with his present position. Why? Because Anwar’s and the Pakatan Rakyat’s present positions are the best solutions for a more prosperous, unified, stable and peaceful Malaysia.
It is alright for politicians to change or evolve as long as it is for the long-term good of a nation. Malaysians know that we cannot keep on dividing ourselves based on the colour of skin, race, religion and so on. Sensible Malaysians are simply tired of this.
We should come together as Malaysians to solve Malaysia’s (and the world’s) problems like the energy, global warming and food crises which are far more pressing and important than racial politics. If Malaysians do not come together as one, we will all fall as one in the years to come. It takes time to convince more Malays to change toward a multi-racial Malaysia. I am not hopeful this will happen overnight but I hope it will happen soon.
We are seeing signs that the Malay electorate is evolving and I dream every day to see a more unified Malaysia that is colour-blind. Malaysians know that the past practices of the BN coalition government in unifying the Malaysian people did not work optimally. This has resulted in a ‘brain drain’ and sub-optimal interest among foreign investors in their investment strategies towards Malaysia.
Ezam should know very well the shortcomings of the NEP and now he is rejoining a party that champions the NEP. Onn Jaafar wanted to open Umno to all and he did not succeed. That is clearly unfortunate. However, we see more progressive Malays in Malaysia nowadays who know that Malaysians cannot keep on dividing among ourselves. These Malays are really tired of Malaysians dividing among ourselves. I see Onn Jaafar as the wisest Malay and I hope his grandson will emulate his position. We hope that there will be more of these Malays who will emulate Onn Jaafar in the years to come. Malaysia has better times to come if we all come together as one Bangsa Malaysia.
I think you may say that Onn Jaafar could foresee an Umno beset with problems like today with its big losses after the March 8 elections as the electorate evolves over time. Onn Jaafar knew that Malaysians could not be racially divided as a divided people cannot be as strong as a unified one. It was just a matter of time and we are seeing an Umno today, decades later, trying to find its course. Onn Jaafar's thinking reverberates in today's Malaysia and Umno.
I dream to see more Malaysians evolving to be colour-blind. Onn Jaafar had done this decades ago. Ezam has unfortunately deviated from the Bangsa Malaysia ideology. Anwar has already evolved to be colour blind. More of Malaysian electorate are gravitating toward a Bangsa Malaysia and Anwar as these sensible Malaysians are simply tired of dividing ourselves based on race. These people will support Anwar as they know that nobody will lose out if Pakatan Rakyat is committed to helping everyone regardless of race and religion.
