Today, it can quite certainly be said that Malaysia is arriving at a new destination. The country’s politics are now close to equal and may perhaps soon surpass the many misplaced democracies of other Third World nations.
Today, too, we are no different from some neighbouring nations reeling and writhing in limbo, unable to spawn and nurture democracy to its fullest. One would dread to re-visit the Wawasan 2020 objectives as we have drifted so far from them.
Not true? Too pessimistic? Well, take a second look at the episodes unfurling around us.
Take an objective look of the countless local and international reviews being churned out with such intensity on the country’s current position.
Are we going to shrug all these off? One must be not only just blind or deaf, but certainly motivated by pure self-interest to ignore the truth that keeps surfacing at every turn.
We have become a grave concern among the leading nations. If left to its own, Malaysia can only set an unwelcome precedent in the region for a sectarian, partial and dynasty-type rule.
So many Malaysians, out of sincere concern and duty, have been hitting the keyboards offering a myriad of suggestions and hope for a better Malaysia.
But no, these messages of hope are being brushed aside by politicians who double- speak out of vested interest.
Even the mainstream media is guilty of allowing the seepage of ill-gotten politicking to rise steadily.
The statements from the corridors of power being reported in the mainstream media all reek of absolute control and abuse of power, with not a single echo of the nation’s interests and its reputation management.
On the contrary, we witness arrogance, a chaotic disorder, a selective prosecution and worse, a very subtle wave of persecution taking place.
All it would take is a single ripple of the global financial crisis tsunami to hit and we would all be soaked in political disaster.
And that would be the day when the nation would be slammed shut behind the doors of autocratic zeal.
Indeed Malaysians are unsure of what will happen tomorrow. That in itself speaks volumes.
