Unsuccessful uni applicants want only two answers

I refer to the letters titled No record of my university application? and Appeal after appeal but still no entry to uni.

I truly feel the rejection and amazement that the writer has been subjected due to the blunder by the ministry. He had to go through Form 6 even though he got straight As in SPM. Even after obtaining great results with the intention of pursuing his dream in STPM, he is left in a turmoil.

Have a heart for that man's plight for god's sake.

I was a student as well, a non-bumi/non-Malay student that is. I scored 4As in SPM and applied for the courses of my choice. As expected, I did not get any placement in a public university for any course. Mind you, I know that there are thousands of hardcore students who got better results hence, deserve the places in the universities more than I did. But, as expected, there were many, many Malay students from my school who got places in the universities with many getting their courses of choice.

Yeah, yeah, we know of the so called ministry's ‘limited seats’ drama. They said there's no quota system, with a merit system replacing it. I would say, bad joke. Because everyone knows this isn't the case. Why can't the education ministry create a panel or a committee instead of the thousand other no-good committees to actually handle the students' plight or after the shocks of the appeal period? Students want answer to two very simple questions, questions that the education personnel are refusing to answer.

How and why. How the students are being ‘chosen’ and why certain students are not being ‘chosen’. I challenge the education ministry to bring out the university and scholarship placement procedures for public eye-view.

So now, since the ministry knows the above writer’s results, his position and that extra two good years in Form 6 that he had spent, will it give him that one spot that he deserves? Or are they simply going to say ‘Sorry, not this time.’? What's his future now? What about the parent's dreams for their son? What about the students who are going to leave school after SPM? Do you think that they will even dare to spend the next two years in Form 6 which doesn't even guarantee a place in university with good results?

Why does the ministry keep telling him that they need the reference number and exam index number for them to check his status or appeal? Look, he is a valid Malaysian student and our unique and universal MyKad number should be the more than enough to get the necessary details of a particular student that is if the database is being maintained properly.

Have the courtesy to inform the failed applicants why they failed to get a place and also on the basis that they were judged. I'm talking about the academic and co-curricular activities here. The writer says he has a good record for both academic studies and co-curricular activities. I don't see many people surpassing his results for him to be left out, even after appealing.

Does it really need a political party to get involved in helping the students to channel a request for their rights? Then, let's just scrap all the good for nothing ministries and committees, and let political parties handle this life-altering events for the students.

You excel in studies and earn your place. But, that's not the case here in Malaysia. The students have to study like crazy and still spend their hard-earned parents' money for tertiary education in private institutions. Pity our parents who only work and work in their lifetime, all in the name of responsibility for their children.

So build more university places if we have not enough places now. You, so-called leaders and officials, do the maths and absorb in your brains how much ‘places’ you can build instead of spending the people's hard-earned money on meetings on what car to buy for the government staff, who to convict next, who to spy on and who can spend the most on holidays and functions.

Are the rakyat supposed to change their lifestyles by living in huts now? Use the saved money to build a better future not only for your own children, but for the rakyat's children too, so that no other country has the guts to even suggest something to us, but only has look up to us. I, as a Malaysian, don't want a better leader because that's a long shot. I just want a good manager to manage the country and to manage the country alone. Start with the education!

To the writer, I say don't give up. Someone who can might help you. Try other channels to get a place of your choice in any institution. I dare to say I'm willing to contribute some monetary assistance to you if you can set up a foundation. I'm sure many others will follow suit. It's not a long shot. Have faith.
