Congratulations to Anwar Ibrahim on being elected as the MP for Permatang Pauh ( PP ) in the recently concluded by-election. Kudos and praises to the voters of PP, the unsung heroes and heroines, who were able to see through the BN masquerade. The voters were able to shatter the disgusting and despicable facade put up by BN behind which they found racists and religious bigots cuddling in one corner; clowns, buffoons, nincompoops and the inept partying in the other; the corrupt, vain and visionless leaders running wild with their cronies busy feeding some canines and felines so pathetically begging for crumbs and scraps. Analysis of the results were intriguing, BN was rejected by PP from so many walks of life, from garbage collectors to professionals, from clerical staff to big time businessmen that their defeat was nothing short of humiliating. Anwar’s campaign on a multi-ethnic platform was well received. If PP is taken to be a representative sample of the whole nation, then history has been created in the PP by-election. It’s a confirmation that the 12th general election support for Pakatan was no fluke and the rakyat had once again rejected BN’s racially divisive and racist policies. This watershed by-election is not unlike the demolition of the Berlin wall, the collapse of which unified Germany. With the true colours of BN unveiled, its rejection by the people may open up an interesting platform for genuine inter-racial understanding and ultimate unity. Anwar is no ordinary MP. He returned to parliament as the opposition leader. He is millions of Malaysians’ hope for a better Malaysia. He is the PM-in-waiting. So are we to celebrate now? No, not yet. Anwar must realise that Pakatan’s road to Putrajaya is fraught with almost unsurmountable obstacles and dangers. As articulated by a number of political analysts, BN may unleash an array of secret weapons in its arsenal to frustrate the ambition of Pakatan in general and Anwar in particular. The threat of these very demonic weapons, whether be they emergency rule, Sodomy II or Operation Lallang II, are very sinister and real. Each and every one of them is capable of stopping Anwar and by extension Pakatan in their march to Putrajaya. Being a shrewd and seasoned political strategist, Anwar may have ready options and plans in place to counter those disruptive demonic weapons. People may still lament some of Anwar’s demeanors during his time in Umno. But remember, people change and they do change, especially after 10 long years of demoralising and unparalleled suffering under the very masters in his first political alma mater. His conduct since the March general election have been very consistent. We should be magnanimous enough to grant him an opportunity to steer this beloved nation of ours away from chaos, turmoil and possible destruction. Let’s make his dream, which is Pakatan’s too, from prisoner to PM a welcomed reality. |
