To cross over or not to cross over?
Pat Lu Sep 5, 08 4:35pm

Dr Mavis Puthucheary proposed that it would be better for Pakatan Rakyat, if parties, rather than individual MPs, crossed over to their side.

In doing so, the leadership of these parties ought to get the broad agreement of their membership so that the rank and file understands the importance of switching sides. This would reduce the unhealthy wheeling and dealing that is associated with the defection of individuals.

Coalitions don't work together except during general elections. When it came to the nuts and bolts of governance, problems cropped up a long time ago within each coalition. Who is really looking after the interest of the nation and the people?

Just one example, look at Perak after March 8 - the ruckus about who should be MB. The wheeling and dealing was based on the number of seats each party won within Perak instead of the right candidate for the job based on his qualification and experience.

When I read the CVs of the three candidates, I chose Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin. Not because he is Malay or Muslim, but because he is a Malaysian best suited for the job. It is the same when choosing a CEO of a company.

It is time the parties within Pakatan merged into a single party. Impossible? Nothing is impossible. Put self-interest aside. The challenge is whether you want to do it or not for the sake of moving the nation forward.

Drop the old ways of doing things that don't work anymore. I've had enough of "politicians". Will the statesmen within each party within the coalition please stand up and champion this?

In the first place, if BN were doing their job, Pakatan wouldn't have a chance to win at the last general election. It won simply because people wanted change and wanted it fast.

BN, it is time to move on and do the right thing if you really care for the nation and the next generation. You failed to deliver and you know the reasons why. You know in your hears of hearts what is really happening within your party that led to the downfall of the entire coalition.

Look around you. Who is really looking after the people's interest? I'm not talking about 'service centres' - that you could have delegated to others to attend to your constituents' needs. I'm talking about your role and responsibility as members of Parliament.

The country has had enough of the arithmetic and analysis on race and religion bias. Whatever the racial composition in each constituency, they are all Malaysians. You may say the majority of the voters in the rural areas will not agree. Well, don't underestimate the people.

Gone are the days where parents told their children who to vote for, "for the sake of maintaining peace, stability and harmony". Now it's the other way round. Their children are telling their parents who to vote for, "for the sake of maintaining peace, stability and harmony".

And where are these children? Working in urban areas all over the country. At the recent Permatang Pauh by-election, though held on a working day, I am aware of people in Petaling Jaya in Selangor who took leave just to go back to vote. Simply because they know every vote counts. I salute these young responsible people.

Now the BN federal government is holding the Pakatan states at ransom. So much money has been earmarked for spending, as seen in the Budget 2009, but no funding has been allocated to the states for economic development. Is that the right thing to do?

We Malaysians have had enough of the in-fighting within each party and the in-fighting within each coalition. No one is looking after the nation's interest. We don't want a two-coalition system anymore but a two party system. Merge. BN Party and PR Party.

Or, we will support whoever forms a single independent party that puts the nation's interest first if you can't put your house in order. We will give them the chance as we have given you. We, the People are the 'boss'.

We have no time to lose. I recommend all of you BN MPs join PKR to give Anwar Ibrahim the mandate immediately to drive this country back on track while your political party puts its house in order.

To me, Anwar is our only hope now and we just have to trust him to do the right thing for all Malaysians. We have no time to lose. If not now, when? If not Anwar, who? The people have given him the mandate as demonstrated in Permatang Pauh.

MPs, just do it. There is nothing to fear but fear itself.
