If we all look at it in a broader sense, we are all pendatang to this land we now call Malaysia. Same like all the Americans who now occupy the land called the United States of America. This is why I believe, we call the early settlers to this land, orang asli.
However, it is not important who came first or last. What is important is that we are all here and should make the best use of everything we are so blessed with.
Malaysian politicians of late, in particular from Umno, have been singing and harping on very sensitive racial matters to try to gain back lost support from the Malays.
Instead of working on more constructive ways of getting back the trust and loyalty shown in the past, they resort to dirty and damaging tactics to instigate trouble between the various communities in order to hold on to power at all costs.
Umno seems to be in sixes and sevens with the erosion of respect for leadership. Alas, a once formidable party is now reduced to bickering and fighting within its ranks and thus causing tension and anxiety among the people.
Don't blame the others for it but your own selves for your greed, cronyism and abuses that have reached alarming proportions.
Though it is just a small minority trying to break the bond and unity of the people, it can if left unchecked, lead to devastating effects from which, recovery may not be possible. Lessons are plentiful around us that playing with race and religion to further one's sinister craving for supremacy will lead to total loss and disregard for human dignity and values.
No one in his/her right mind would want such a situation to happen. As the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure", all efforts should be made to contain this race bashing and low handed tactics if we are to progress as a developing nation to be on par with other richer and more politically matured nations in the near future.
Peaceful co-existence cannot and must not be compromised or used to stir up hatred, suspicion or ill feelings among the peoples of this truly Asian nation. No one should go scot free if they disturb the peace and tranquility in the country.
To all politicians, prove your worth, fight fair and lead with honour. Gone are the days when you could take the people for a ride. The nation has awoken and are well aware, thanks to the electronic media, of all your activities.
