In the recent MCA party elections, Dr Chua Soi Lek surprised others by winning the deputy president’s post. A reporter then asked MCA Central Committee member Wong Mook Leong: ‘Can Ong Tee Keat (elected MCA president) and Chua work together?’
His reply was sharp. According to him it’s not a question of whether they can work together or not but rather that they have to and must work together.
The main reason being they were elected by the delegates to be the leaders for this new term so therefore they must work together.
Thus when PAS condemned MCA delegates for choosing Chua, they were actually slapping their own face. After all, isn’t Pakatan Rakyat led by Anwar Ibrahim who was found guilty of abuse of power and twice charged for sodomy?
The gist of the matter is to weigh the morality and capability of a leader, as Chua had argued during an open debate. Do we want a good guy in terms of ‘morality’ but one who will bring the whole party towards destruction?
There’s rumour that Umno most probably can’t accept Chua. However, Chua’s entry into the cabinet is not determined by Umno. MCA leaders are elected by MCA grassroots and the central delegates, not by Umno.
The MCA central delegates have elected Ong and Chua to helm the leadership. Thus, other parties have to accept the result.
It is not proper to discuss or argue whether the Ong-Chua team is suitable or can Chua go back into political ring. One has to view it more positively.
It’s time for Chua to do his job and for MCA to let Chua develop and serve the party, the Chinese community, BN and the nation.
Chua is already the MCA deputy president. It is something that cannot be denied. History will record this fact. Nobody can deny or refute it.
