A Muslim's duty to struggle against the bad

I refer to the letter I'll respect your turf, you respect mine .

I fully agree with his views of the writer and I hope others (non-Muslims) would read and understand his very wise comments. In the Holy Quran, in Surah Al-Kafirun, there is a verse which says (translation): 'To you, your religion, to me, my religion'.

It is based on this command of Allah that good Muslims do not interfere in the affairs of other people's religions. We do not question or belittle Hindus or Christians and so on.

Reciprocally, we expect people of other religions to do likewise, what more when they know nothing or very little about Islamic doctrines, philosophy, principles and values other than from their general reading or from what they think they ‘know’.

Even quite a number of Muslims themselves are lacking in their knowledge of their own religion. That is why we have many deviant teachings and certain parties championing the wrong things.

Let us take the latest issue of Inul 'the gyrating female contraption'. To non-Muslims and may be some 'modern ' Muslims, the way she dresses and gyrates her body on stage may be all right, although American TV in the 1950s did not dare to show the bottom-half of a gyrating Elvis Presley when he was singing on stage.

But to Muslims, their worldview and the way they look at everything are based on their Islamic values. These Islamic values are based on what Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad and was encapsulated in the Holy Quran. And through his traditions or hadith , the Prophet actualises and elaborates on these values.

One of these values is on how Muslim women should conduct themselves in public. In terms of dressing, they should cover their aurat, showing only certain parts of their bodies. They should not wear tight or revealing clothes. They should not wiggle and gyrate their bodies.

All this is taught by the religion of Islam. Even if non-Muslims do not agree with this value, they should not ridicule it or make it a butt of a joke. If some Muslim women do not want to adhere to this 'dress and body movement code' even after having been given advice, then Muslims leave it to them and Allah.

The issue of some body or a group of people asking for a ban on Inul's show falls under the value on amar maaruf , nahi munkar or doing good and refraining from doing something that is bad. If a Muslim sees something that is munkar or 'bad', Prophet Muhammad enjoined him to either

1. Take appropriate action to stop it if he has the power, or

2. Urge others who are in power to stop it if he does not have the power, or

3. If he is unable to do (1) and (2), to rebel against it in his heart.

The group of people asking for a ban on Inul’s show has concluded that the Inul' show is munkar and they have taken action number two as outlined above.

So, to them, they have fulfilled their responsibility and therefore Allah cannot take them to task either in this world or in the hereafter.
