Rain has not left us these past several days. The greed driven exploits of the mercenary which have been heavily weighing on nature, has again gorged a telling tale at Bukit Antarabangsa. As the fate of residents hangs precariously, there are many more episodes seeping under the bridge of this nation's history in strong, unmeasured currents.
What would Malaysia come to at the turn of tomorrow's global beatings?
It is under these grave and challenging circumstances that one cannot help reflecting: Is Malaysia mismanaged?
Take a look at our political landscape. No one in his or her sane mind can qualify the happenings since last general election as ‘semuanya okay (everything is okay).
Take a look at the crime scene. No one with grey matter will concur with the leaders' call to adjust our 'perceptions'.
Take a look at how our students are performing in school. No teacher worth his or her salt will agree that tuition is the savior of a failing schooling system.
Take a look at all the photos of who's who in town being uploaded on blogs. Any God fearing soul would be left speechless at the sight of the sons and daughters of the elite frolicking in filthy shame at the expense of the tax-paying citizens.
Take a look at all the headline grabbing sagas about the 'events' in the country these past several years. Anyone who has common sense will agree that the 'Malaysia Boleh' spirit has become a sordid joke. We have happenings ranging from the C4-bombing of a woman, to the massive rigging of the judiciary, to unaccounted millions of ringgit going asunder.
And if we take a look outside our shores, we will have all the reasons more to stop and ask "Is Malaysia mismanaged?"
The US, Japan and Singapore have courageously indicated that they are heading into recession. The future of the world is feverishly heading to a fragile imbalance as nations across the globe are desperately scrapping their great minds to fight a battle that was last fought in the 1930s.
But Malaysians are so far detached from reality. Ask the public Joe hanging-out at Mid-Valley or SOGO. Or maybe, you may want to speak to your office mates. The blank or even ridiculous gaze they are likely to retort with when asked about the global crisis brewing, will make one feel so sick instantly.
Do we blame the rakyat for their indifference?
The papers churn out 'feel good' stories. The politicians say Malaysia is okay and quickly add the name of God to the claim ('God willing').
Why blame or attempt to hide behind God's will for everything when the creator gave everyone the freedom to choose and account for all deeds and misdeeds?
By all and so many accounts, is it then a crime to say that Malaysia is mismanaged?
In this age of inter-dependence and connectivity, there is no guarantee that a tiny nation of 26 million with a 57 percent dependency on export earnings can insulate itself from the global economic turmoil.
Yes, we had oil to cushion us before. But with the price of the oil plunging, do we not see the light flickering out on us soon?
Worse, with nature threatening the region of another epic tsunami, Malaysia may even be left without rice as seller nations cut down their tonnage to us. Did we ever ponder on this at least?
Hence this is not the season to be distracted by race and religious feuds and rights or abuses. This is not the time to wrench political clout at all cost. This is definitely not the time of scrambling at all cost for party supremacy.
Leaders, politicians, mercenaries. Put down your tools of warring. Abort your agendas of personal gain and power.
Get down to work. Collaborate. Unite. Draw on the strengths of your diversity - be it religion, race, creed or political affiliation. If you fail to do so, you are the nation's worst terrorist and 'Public Enemy Number One'.
This is the time to save the rakyat from an impending disaster that will only leave a gash so deep that this nation may never heal from if we are late.
Otherwise, we might as well continue singing Malaysia is not mismanaged. ‘Semuanya okay!’
