There is a lot of public outcry about negligence and wrong doing by those in authority and appointed to safeguard the country and its citizens.

We have the mass media and blogs to voice out such gross abuse of power and it is slowly but definitely making an impact and consequently, actions are being taken to look into these acts of cruelty and abuses and punish those responsible for them.

We should continue to report such disregard for civilty and humanity in carrying out one's duty no matter how compelling and tempting it may seem to use these inhumane tactics to extract information.

Holding demonstrations and public vigils to voice out our concern, anger, abhorrence and outcry for these gruesome and brutal actions by the police in particular, is not the right way or approach.

Today the electronic media is helping in many ways to highlight to the public the actual situations and realities that exist around us and we have a means of voicing our own opinions and thoughts through this media.

The people concerned will have to take notice and make the necessary changes and corrections knowing very well they are being watched closely, like an hawk looking for its prey. And some changes are slowly taking place as the leaders are continually reminded to serve the people who put them there and not serve themselves.

Our neighbour, Singapore too is very strict about demonstrations or vigils and any violation of its rules are swiftly and severely dealt with. We all do not agree with such strong control over the people but it may sometimes be necessary, to maintain civil order and to prevent chaos and disorder. The country still progresses and freedom of expression and movement is not curtailed.

Freedom should be respected, valued and safeguarded as a precious commodity and not be abused or used to cause panic and disturb people's normal way of life. Demonstrations can do a lot of damage and peace loving people can be hurt or killed.

If the people continue to ignore the government's call to avoid holding any demonstrations or vigils, then the government may be given no choice but to impose stricter control like emergency rule that does not benefit anyone and can cause a lot of inconvenience and freedom of movement that we all enjoy and very often today, take for granted.

Weigh the pros and cons when contemplating an illegal gathering that is normally to serve a minority group but can bring a lot of hardship and suffering to the majority.

It is said there is a thin line between sanity and insanity and people can be easily swayed and pulled to the other side, and to return may not be possible.

We are a highly civilised society and there is a democratic process to elect the government. May 13 serves as a grim reminder of what demonstrations can lead to and the subsequent establishment of the National Operations Council (NOC) that stayed in power for quite some time to implement a number of very one-sided changes, for which we are now paying the price.

In whatever situation, we have to work with the government and not against them as they are here to provide and protect all of us. Voice your displeasures and concerns or anger as and when you feel it is necessary but do not take to the streets.
