One cannot help but feel helpless in the face of all the problems facing Malaysia today. Malaysiakini and the letters section by itself, cannot began to even cover all the issues that affect us.
So I would like to point out that yesterday, we just bailed out two failed LRT operators to the tune of RM5.6 billion. Even more incredulous of course, is the fact that the government then leases the operation back to the two firms that could not break even operating it beforehand.
Now that we have just wasted RM5.6 billion on the LRT, could we please see the plans of how the government is thinking of improving the public transport system in Kuala Lumpur?
I for one would like to see more integration with buses, and a ticketing system that can be used for all public transportation like they have in Seoul and Osaka.
There should be fewer buses going into the city and more local buses operating in tandem with LRT and Komuter train stations so that less time is wasted waiting for buses, the LRT is used more efficiently and buses will cease to clog up the roads leading into Kuala Lumpur. They could not even get the timetable right for some limited feeder services by Intrakota so that workers can get to the office before 9am or earlier.
Inept and inefficient can only be kindest words to describe those in the Transport Ministry and DBKL in charge of the public transport system in Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding. The person responsible for this debacle should have resigned a long time ago. As is the norm in Malaysia, the same inept people and companies will continue to bleed us taxpayers and not provide any benefits to make our lives easier.
I can understand how people can be apathetic to issues such as human rights and freedom of the press, but can they also be apathetic to things that affect their daily lives such as public transport?
It is about time we started organising campaigns to pressure our MPs about the things that matter to us and demand change and improvement for the things that affect us in our daily lives.
Although we should be grateful for what we have, we must never stop thinking that things can always be better.
