Perak crisis: 'Is the constitution still valid?'

vox populi big thumbnail ‘If one wants to affect the office of the speaker through constitutional means, should that not apply to the post of menteri besar as well? Perhaps Zambry can enlighten us all on this matter.'

On Zambry to move motion to sack speaker

Confused: It is great that Sivakumar is explicitly acknowledged as the speaker. This suggests that the Perak constitution still has legs.

But if one wants to affect the office of the speaker through constitutional means, should that not apply to the post of menteri besar as well?

Perhaps Zambry can enlighten us all on this matter...

It does appear to me that these constitutional matters have a bearing on whether we refer to Zambry as YAB or YB.

But this has not stopped the state secretary from referring to Zambry as YAB. Is this not constitutionally premature?

Perhaps the constitution does not apply in the case of the MB but only in reference to the speaker.

All this ‘confusion' is coming from the same pen, and within a single document. Is the constitution still valid or not?

Simple Malaysian Citizen: Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.

Unbelievable that the present ruling party can do a daylight robbery in this way! Well, it speaks volumes.

Injustice upon injustices. We ordinary citizens all went to school and can tell what is right or not.

The ruling party has lost all its dignity, respect and trust of the citizens.

Jeffrey Goh:

Zambry is like a crying hyena who didn't get the share of meat from the lion.

Does he know what he is doing actually? The more he tries to bring down the speaker, the deeper his own grave he is digging.

Does Zambry truly listen to the rakyat's wishes? Does he hear all the little voices in him?

A good leader has a good instinct that will guide him but it seems like this one has nothing special at all. No respect for the rakyat and he only cares to topple the speaker.

A good leader will wait for the right time. The right time to show the people that he will truly serve them no matter which year.

In the eyes of the rakyat, nothing has changed as far as BN is concerned. No difference since the day they ruled the rakyat.

The rakyat's advice to Zambry is not to sell us something that we already own; sell us something new or different and then we will support you. Understand?

Doraisamy: When I read the story of the Perak crisis, it's really mind-boggling. Although, we are not lawyers or judges but the simple concept of BN bullying the Perak Pakatan government is obviously seen.

The PM must dissolve the Perak state assembly to pave the way for new state elections which will eventually solve the crisis.

Even if BN loses the whole of Perak to the opposition, it's okay. With the decision to have the elections, at least you will win the hearts of Malaysians which would give you a fruitful result in the upcoming general election.

This move by BN Perak to get rid of speaker Sivakumar and appoint a new speaker is not appropriate.

Principally, it's wrong. If Najib is talking about fairness and transparency, then it should start with the Perak state election.

The Malaysian mindset will always be very supportive of the underdogs. Therefore, it's difficult for us to be in favour of the BN government until you play politics on a level ground.

P Dev Anand Pillai: It looks as though, BN MB Zambry had not been advised well as speaker Sivakumar is not bound by the federal court declaration as it is only a declaration.

Further, Siva is protected by Article 72 of the federal constitution which supercedes the Perak state constitution.

It will be the speaker himself who will be receiving the proposal to sack him and as such, all he needs to do is to ignore the application.

Further the position of the three so called independant BN friendly ADUNs is yet to be finalised as their resignation is in dispute.

As speaker, he can make a ruling that they be not allowed into the house. Further the rain tree assembly sitting is still valid and it has confirmed the decision made by the Privileges Committee on the suspension of Zambry and his cabinet.

Therefore the argument that this was not done before the house for it to be valid does not hold water.

All speaker Siva has to do is stick to all the decisions that he has made thus far and say that the decision of the assembly is not subject to judicial scrutiny and BN will have to go home.

Therefore, it will be magnanimous of BN MB Zambry to instead ask for the assembly to be dissolved so that the people of Perak can decide.

He will be respected if he does that.

On 30% bumi equity lifted for 27 service sectors

The Machaa Dude: I beg to differ on the so-called 'economic reforms' of PM Najib Razak.

As far as what I've read so far is concerned, this to me is nothing more than a political ploy aimed at appealing to the sensitivities of non-bumiputera Malaysians.

If it were an honest piece of policy in the direction of meritocracy, he would have liberalised all sectors of the government.

Therefore, let us all not immerse ourselves in an artificial sense of euphoria to justify such piecemeal reforms.

And let us all not forget that while a certain former prime minister pushed forward for economic reforms, he totally subjugated the moral standing of our nation, what with rampant levels of corruption and cronyism in his heyday.

Will it be any different with Mr Najib? For his sake, I do hope so.

Though judging from his heavy-handedness in the Perak debacle, as well his deafening silence in the face of criticism from all corners of the world regarding a certain Mongolian model, it seems to me that the blue-eyed boy shall go the way of his mentor.

On PAS division may boycott Penanti

Dennis Madden: ‘This is not a boycott against PKR but instead to allow us to focus on strengthening the party in Permatang Pauh.'

... and the best way to strengthen the party in Permatang Pauh is to stand together with your fellow PKR members to ensure a resounding victory for your coalition.

The stupidity generated as a result of the Malaysian male selfishness seem to know no limits.

On EC approves PSM's clenched fist logo

Lilian Tan:

It baffles me that the EC would find the ‘clenched fist' graphic in the logo of Parti Sosialis Malaysia as ‘morally unsuitable' and having ‘connotations of violence'.

Why this holier-than-thou attitude when Umno goons routinely wave their keris at their general assembly to try and keep everyone else in line?

Anyway, it's a small but significant concession. All the same, congratulations to PSM!

On Sukuk bond buyers, beware of the banks!

Simon: Last Friday, I deposited a banker's cheque in Affin Bank, Sea Park Branch in Selangor.

I was told that it will take two working days to clear the cheque and the funds being made available to me. This had me puzzled.

There have been recent reports from Bank Negara that all cheques nationwide will be cleared within 24 hours with the new cheque clearing system. What is BNM's stand on this?

Can we still expect 24-hours clearance or are we back to 48 hours again?

If it is 48 hours, then once again the consumers are at the losing end as these floating funds are available to the financial institution for a longer period of time at no cost and they could make money from it.
