As the clock ticks down for the May 7 Perak state assembly sitting, the days of Speaker V Sivakumar is also numbered.

perak speaker sivakumar 180409 In a posting on his blog today, the businessman turned politician claimed that a motion to boot him out has already been submitted by Barisan Nasional to the assembly's secretary office.

Sent yesterday morning, the motion proposed to replace the country's first Indian speaker with another Indian politician, former MIC Sungkai state assemblyperson R Ganesan.

The motion dated April 29 was endorsed by BN's Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir and supported by Sungai Rapat assemblyperson and exco Hamidah Osman.

r ganesan mic perak "Ganesan's ( left ) consent letter on the appointment was also attached with the motion," added Sivakumar in his posting.

Prior to this, it was widely speculated that deputy speaker and Jelapang state assemblyperson Hee Yit Fong, who opted out of DAP and became an independent, would be promoted to speaker.

MIC's Dr S Vasan also in the running?

The New Straits Times today suggested that Dr S Vasan, who contested against ousted Perak menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin for the Pasir Panjang state seat in the general election, could be appointed as the new speaker.

The Perak constitution provides for the appointment of a non state assemblyperson as speaker.

S Vasan MIC Perak According to the daily, Vasan ( left ) was in MIC president's S Samy Vellu's good books and a front-runner for the post.

State assembly secretary Abdullah Antong Sabri on Monday informed all 59 elected representatives of the motion through a letter and were told to submit their nominee for the post to replace Sivakumar by April 30.

Sivakumar, who is from DAP, has firmly stood behind Mohammad Nizar following BN’s political coup in February and employed every trick in the book to fully take over the state’s administration.

Recently, Sivakumar's decision to suspend Zambry for 18 months and his exco members for 12 months was overruled by the Federal Court, allowing Zambry and his elected representatives - with the assistance of three independent representatives who opted out of Pakatan - to have sufficient majority in the House.

The highest court in the land also set aside Sivakumar's decision to declare vacant the state seats of the three defected Pakatan Rakyat state assemblypersons.

Don't bar the media

In a related development, Sivakumar called on the Perak state government to allow all media to cover the May 7 assembly proceedings.

He was responding to a Malaysiakini report yesterday which quoted state secretariat corporate and public relations department senior officer Noor Aniza Mansor as saying that only representative from "main media" are allowed entry.

However, entry is limited to only two journalists per organisation, except for state-owned RTM and TV3 who would be allowed to admit three personnel each.

Noor Aniza also said that all Internet-based media organisations, including Malaysiakini , would not be granted permission to enter the hall.

According to her, the directive was issued by state secretary Abdul Rahman Hashim.

In a press statement today, Sivakumar lambasted the secretary for once again intervening in matters of the assembly.

"The proceedings of the assembly is under the jurisdiction of the speaker. The secretary did not discuss these matters with me and made a unilateral decision based on his whim and fancy.

"I am warning him not to interfere in these matters. As a civil servant, I hope he holds on to the principle of neutrality," he said, adding that he will meet Abdul Rahman soon to get an explanation.
