Teratai assemblyperson Jenice Lee and 15 others, who were detained for allegedly holding an illegal assembly two days ago, could be released when their remand ends tomorrow.

Tan, who was with DAP lawyer Wong Kai Phun, later went into the police station.

However, according to Tan, it remains uncertain whether they would be freed today.

“We are still not sure how long we have to wait... but I hope the police could settle this fast. It is not a complicated case after all,” he said when contacted.

The 16 were held under two-day remand order which was obtained at the Ampang Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The 12 male detainees were brought to Ampang police station while the four women were detained at Pandan Indah police station.

It was not the first time Lee was arrested this week. On Tuesday, she was detained for six hours, also for holding a candlelight vigil.

The 16 were arrested at 8.45pm on Thursday after a candlelight vigil outside Lee’s service centre in Teratai to mourn the ‘death of democracy’ in Perak.

New twist to the investigation

Speaking to journalists, he said the remand period for the 16 would only end tomorrow.

But there appeared to be a new twist to the investigation.

According to him, Ampang Jaya CID chief Goh Lee Fook had also said that Lee would be investigated under the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (PPPA), in addition to illegal assembly.

During the candlelight vigil, DAP had distributed a two-page leaflet titled ‘507 Detik Hitam dalam Sejarah Demokrasi Malaysia!’ (507 - A Black Moment in Malaysia’s History of Democracy).

Under the PPPA, the police could charge her for publishing an illegal leaflet or for spreading false news.

Meanwhile, Ampang Jaya deputy chief district officer Amiruddin Jamaluddin had reportedly said that no decision had been made on releasing Lee and the others today.

Wong however argued that since Lee’s statement had already been recorded by the police, she should be freed immediately.
