A 19-year-old female student who returned home to Johor from Melbourne has been confirmed to have the A(H1N1) virus. This is the first reported case of the flu in the state.
The student had travelled via Changi Airport in Singapore on flight SQ0238 on June 22.
State Women, Family, Community Development and Health committee chairperson Dr Robiah Kosai, who revealed this today, added the girl was being treated at the Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Baru.
"The student was home on vacation after six months in Melbourne," Robiah told reporters today.
The student's family members - parents and two siblings - who picked her up at the airport have been placed under home quarantine for a week.
Also placed in home quarantine is the taxi driver who drove them back.
The girl's 16-year-old brother and 17-year-old sister study at Sekolah Dato Jaafar and SMK Convent Infant Jesus.
Robiah said that health department staff will also be visiting the schools today.
"We will check the two schools to prevent any spread of the virus," she added.
Bernama reported that the student's grandmother had died of old age this morning and the Health Department staff were helping the family with the funeral arrangements to ensure that they were not exposed to others.
As at yesterday, the nation had recorded 68 cases of the flu,
largely concentrated in the Klang Valley. Other states affected are Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Kedah and Sarawak.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry today revealed that 12 new A(H1N1) cases have been reported so far. Of these 10 are imported cases while two are locally transmitted.
The total number of cases now stands at 80. Malaysia has not recorded any fatalities as a result of this flu.
