Voters who have travelled home to cast their ballots in the Manek Urai by-election in Kelantan are receiving 'transport allowance' from a group of unidentified individuals.

This morning, scores of people were seen queuing up outside a wooden house in the vicinity of the South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar) building, some 50 metres from the SK Peria polling centre.

NONE They submitted their MYkad to 'officials' - who called out names from a list - stationed at the front door, in return for the cash.

A senior citizen, who had come from Kuala Lumpur to cast his ballot, told Malaysiakini that those whose names were on the list received RM300 as transport allowance.

There were no political logos in sight. A white Proton Wira bearing the Kesedar emblem was parked in front of the house.

At 11.30am, Malaysians for Free and Fair Elections (Mafrel) workers and policemen went to the house.

NONE A man, believed to be the owner ( right ), said: "Ni dah janji daripada Kuala Lumpur untuk bagi pada mereka sebagai transportation allowance, ini sama dengan PAS awak tak buat pulak.”

(This is a promise for those coming from Kuala Lumpur. This is for their transportation allowance. It is the same for PAS but you do not take action).

The elderly house owner, who last week organised a ceramah with an Umno Youth leader, had initially refused to allow the Mafrel workers and policemen in to his house.

However, he relented after Mafrel workers insisted on entering the premises.

After the visit from the police, those waiting outside to receive their money were asked to disperse.

A man later emerged from the house with a bag believed to contain money and left the place.

In Manjor earlier, PAS supporters cornered a car carrying several men whom they believed were posing as Election Commission (EC) officers outside the polling station.

The car was also fitted with an EC sticker.

The police later intervened and confirmed that the men were not EC officers. They were then instructed to leave the scene while the PAS supporters ripped off the ‘official sticker’ from the car.

Supporters trade barbs

Earlier, Umno and PAS supporters traded barbs at SK Manek Urai.

As usual, the spectre of slain Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu was raised. Apart from this, the PAS supporters also yelled ' rasuah ' (corruption).

Their rivals took a swipe at Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim by making inferences to his sodomy charge.

NONE In Manek Urai Baru, a woman, believed to be an Umno supporter became upset over the incessant shouts of Allahuakbar and prayer recitals by PAS supporters.

The incident happened shortly after PAS spiritual adviser Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat visited the area this morning.

The woman was then seen arguing with some of the PAS officials over the matter.

A PAS supporter was also seen hanging a RM50 and RM10 banknotes a makeshift fishing rod in reference to the attempt by rival Umno to fish for votes with promises of a new bridge in the remote state constituency ( right ).
