vox populi small thumbnail Without public support, the MACC cannot be effective. Its advisory panels must be empowered to bring credibility and people's trust in the MACC.

On Discord in MACC over media statements

Josie: Any diminution of the integrity of the MACC means the institution, established to combat corruption in Malaysia, will lose the confidence of the people. Without public support, the MACC cannot be effective. Its advisory panels must be empowered to bring credibility and people's trust in the MACC.

One tool of empowerment is for MACC panel members to speak up on the need for the greatest transparency in seeking the truth about Teoh Beng Hock's needless death. Ramon Navaratnam and Robert Phang did what the empowered do - speak up. Without the freedom to speak, advisory members will not be empowered. The panels should not be silenced.

It has been said by Oscar Sanchez, "When even the smallest part of truth has been hidden, a great lie may be born".

Charles Chia: At the rate the re-vamped MACC is doing, it has definitely lost public confidence and respect. It is smacked of selective prosecutions and borders more on persecutions. It is certainly not just perceived but seems to act not in the interest of the public but the powers-that-be.

MACC also displayed the distinctively hallmark of an abused government institutions by shamelessly trying to seek the support and approval of those silent majority of their advisory panel members. I am sure if every members were to say their piece, MACC would earn a rebuke.

TMF:

There is an interesting Hong Kong movie entitled ‘I Corrupt All Cops’, depicting the deep and widespread corruption within the Hong Kong police force in the 60s and 70s which eventually culminated in the setting up of ICAC (Independent Commission Against Corruption) to successfully clean up the force.

In the past, 90 percent of the HK police force, from the very top to the rank and file were corrupt to the core and the police personnel and their families were very much hated by the society. The then Anti-Corruption Branch which was reporting to the police at that time was considered a big joke.

Today, to be a policeman in HK is honourable and all ICAC officers are considered real heroes in the society. If the government is sincere in doing something right, perhaps it can screen this movie to every policeman, every MACC officer and their family members for free.

Azaman Abu Bakar: The ICAC has 97 percent support from the Hong Kong people. To really gauge its effectiveness, the MACC could also seek the views of the Malaysian public and not only from its board members. Sometimes the truth can hurt a little bit, but in the long run, it’s good for the country.

Ong: Irregularities in PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) keep being exposed. Police reports keep being made. But so far meaningful action taken is a big fat zero. Investigations and reports do not come free. So far it appears that the only effect of all the investigations and reports is to inflate the final bill for the PKFZ saga.

On PM: It’s sedition to incite racial tension

Dr Jacob George: Rightly or wrongly, the comments put forth (in Malaysiakini) so far speaks volumes. We do not need spin-masters nor prostituting journalists/columnists saying otherwise.

We cannot have the perception that there are two set of laws operating in 1Malaysia. The pertinent questions remains:

1) Will action be taken against Utusan Malaysia and its reporters for what was extremely provocative and seditious articles of late?

2) Will action be taken against the Al-Islam magazine and its reporters who violated the sanctity of Christian worship and our sacred Eucharists and then have the indecency to publish it?

Prime Minister, sir, with all humility, I say this - if the answer to both are in the affirmative then we are taking the right and best step forward.

Democrat:

What Najib probably meant was anyone other than Utusan Malaysia and Umno warlords who causes racial tension should be charged for sedition. Najib and the home minister will 'close one eye' to those two if they spew racism and instigate the Malays against Indian and Chinese Malaysians.

On Kota Damansara residents to lobby Carrefour France

Peter Tan: I live nearby in Bayu Damansara and I think the residents are wrong to oppose the development. The building is almost half complete and millions of ringgit have been invested in the project. If the project is left abandoned, the repercussion will be worse. We all know what happens to abandoned projects, dengue cases, haven for drug addicts and criminals, etc. Opposition should have been done before the project commence not during.
