Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarnor, the part-time model handed a sentence of a RM5,000 fine and six strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to drinking alcohol at a hotel in Cherating, Pahang, has

given notice not to be disturbed.

NONE Kartika, who was resigned to the sentence and wanted it to be carried out quickly, said too many individuals, politicians, government organisations and non-governmental organisations had met her and her family lately.

This, she said, had occasionally disturbed her's and her family's life and that besides she had been urged to do things she did not want to do.

"As such, I give notice that I do not want to be disturbed by any individuals, politicians, government organisations and non-governmental organisations and any meeting that has, is and will be planned and any communication with me and my family should be stopped immediately," said Kartika in a statement issued through the legal firm of Adham and Associates here today.

Kartika said she would not hesitate to take legal action against anyone who disturbed her peace and that of her family after this.

Lawyers appointed

In the statement she stressed that she very much regretted and was repentful of the offence she committed.

"I will not hold anyone responsible for the carrying out of the caning," she said.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno Kartika said she had received advice from several civil and syariah lawyers on the carrying out of the sentence and was satisfied with the advice given.

She had also appointed several civil and syariah lawyers from the legal firm of Adham and Associates in Ipoh to look after the interests of herself and her family.

Kartika was fined RM5,000 and and sentenced to receive six srokes of the rotan by the Kuantan Syariah High Court on July 20 after pleading guilty to drinking alochol at a hotel in Cherating on July 11, 2008.

On Aug 24, the caning was postponed by Pahang Syariah High Court judge Abdul Rahman Yunus out of respect for the month of Ramadan.

Three parties to discuss caning

In KUANTAN, a court source told Bernama that matters relating to Kartika's caning will be discussed by three parties.

The source said the matters were the date of caning, the place and how it would be done and that they would be discussed among the Syarie chief prosecutor, Syarie chief registrar and prison authorities.

"Decisions will be made after the discussions which will be held after Hari Raya," the source said without telling the exact date for the discussions.

"This is a normal procedure after sentence has been passed," said the source.

On Sept 10, the Pahang Islamic Religious Department director Abdul Manan Abdul Rahman said the caning would be carried out but after Hari Raya.

"Society does not understand the difference between the syarie caning which aims to educate the offender, and the civil caning which is most painful to the offender, and in the case of Kartika, she is being punished with the syarie caning," he said.
