Police now 'judge, jury, executioner'?

vox populi small thumbnail 'Normally in a gunfight, there will be casualties on both sides. But in our local police gunfights, the casualties are all on the other side.'

Double blow for shootout victim's family

Raja Rajan: In a democracy, there is always a separation of powers. Executive, judiciary and above all, the legislature. The police are just an enforcement agency under the executive branch of the government structure and given the responsibility to maintain law and order.

But ever since I learnt to read and write, I've heard of unscrupulous, irresponsible and unjustified killings by the police on the pretext of ‘self-defence'. Normally in a gunfight, there will be casualties on both sides. But in our local police gunfights, the casualties are all on the other side.

Who gave the power to the police to be the judge, jury and executioner at the same time? Why is there a pin drop silence from Anwar Ibrahim and company? Is it because Indians are not a crucial vote bank?

John Jason: Before I proceed with my comment, let me say that I am an Indian and many friends of mine, who are also Indians, have been robbed by fellow Indians who do not hesitate to harm (slash with parang) another Indian during their robberies. I think there should at least be some compliments for the police force for eliminating a group of armed robbers.

There have been many cases of armed robberies or snatch thefts where the victims, who are also Indians, are slashed in the process of being robbed. I think every family should bring up their young with some decent means of earning their income.

This instead of allowing their children or family members to lead a life of crime and then blame the police when the police are doing their job of reducing crime.

Louis: I do not want to justify the police shooting these few supposed criminals. They might be innocent for all we know. But I can relate to you how merciless these snatch thieves can be. I witnessed how a snatch thief dragged my wife on the road when he attempted to snatch her sling bag.

I could only watch helplessly from afar. The result? My wife suffered a shoulder dislocation and bruises all over her body. Lucky thing there were no cars around. Otherwise, I dare not imagine what would have happened to her.

MB: Federal gov't shortchanging S'gor

Playfair: Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, we salute you and, yes, we will remember the bridges, the roads leading to the golf courses, and much, much more. Thank you for Selcat and bringing honesty and accountability - we, who had no voice, are now being heard.

We look forward to more declassification of ‘state secrets' so that the truth will be heard - a very rare commodity in BN's Islamic Malaysia.

We all now know the extent of shortchanging of funds by BN to Pakatan Rakyat states and are also aware of the sinister motives for the acquisition of the state's water assets - to build BN's ‘war-chest' at our expense.

Incidentally, thank you for the ‘free-water' allowance - something never dreamed possible under BN. Go after those who owe the state government and do not allow half-past six ‘civil servants' to take refuge within the shadowy loopholes of government rules and regulations. We have full confidence that you will proceed without fear to rid the state of its sleaze.

PaachNair: Yes, we know how and whom we should vote for in the next general election. But we beg Pakatan Rakyat to pull up their socks and set up a government which cares for the rakyat and not individual greed. Pakatan should nurture the people's confidence in it and then we will assure Pakatan's move to Putrajaya.

DPM orders Siputeh rep to attend assembly sitting

Wira: Under what rule can a federal minister issue an order which is the prerogative of the state assembly? If the state assemblyperson wants to be reinstated against the ruling of the speaker of a state assembly acting under assembly rules, his proper remedy lies with the courts.

Ganasan Kailasanathan: BN ministers should stop interfering in state assemblies. If the DPM orders the state assemblyperson not to respect the speaker, then can we also ask suspended Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo to barge into Parliament.

Then we will raise the question, ‘Under what power did the Parliament speaker suspend Gobind Singh Deo'?

Chee Hoe Siew: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, learn accountability. Seriously, your statement really brings your integrity to a new low. Not only that, the Election Commission's is now lower than ever on the matter of trustworthiness. Can we still say that the EC is impartial?
