PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and vice-president R Sivarasa were forced to abandon an important political bureau meeting mid-way today because of an appointment with the police.

Wan Azizah and Sivarasa hurriedly left the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya at 3pm, and proceeded to the Tropicana police station a few doors away.

“They have already said they have strong evidence in their prosecution of the case. I don’t understand why they need to investigate more,” she said.

Wan Azizah said she and Sivarasa had been informed two days ago to present themselves at the station today.

An hour later, the duo emerged and informed journalists that Wan Azizah had been called in as an ‘alibi witness’ in the sodomy trial of her husband, Anwar Ibrahim. The statement was recorded by DSP Lily Chu.

bersih ec constitutional putrajaya 181207 sivarasa “This has nothing to do with the alibi notice filed by Anwar's defence team. We submitted that about a year ago, during the stipulated time,” said Sivarasa ( right ), who accompanied Wan Azizah as her lawyer.

“This is the police version, according to their investigations. They called in (Wan Azizah) as their alibi witness,” he added.

Sivarasa was asked if he foresees the possibility of the case being dropped.

He replied: “I think not... we have to be realistic.”

Trial just days away

Wan Azizah then appeared at the end of a press conference called by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution on the decision to refer Kulim Bandar Baru parliamentarian Zulkifli Noordin to a disciplinary committee.

Anwar, who was present, quipped, “They have run out of witnesses and now they come after my wife.

“It looks like they are trying to ‘turn over’ my wife. This is harassment.”

Last Wednesday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court postponed the trial to Feb 2.

Anwar faces up to 20 years imprisonment if he is convicted of sodomising  Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 24, who was an aide in his office.

The trial, which was to have begun last July, has been delayed by a series of legal manoeuvres by the defence team.
