'MACC as toothless as ACA'

vox populi big thumbnail ‘Firstly, the MACC can't prosecute, so they need to go through the Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail. And how's the AG chosen?’

MACC not at fault, says commission chief

Long Arm: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has never been and will never be at fault as far as the BN is concerned and as long at it does Umno's bidding. If it tried to do otherwise under its new chief, it will be the first time ever.

Malaysian: MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed talks a good talk but I'm not sure if he can do anything even if he wanted to. Firstly, the MACC can't prosecute, so they need to go through the Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail.

How's the AG chosen? Who does he report to? Why is the AG's office allowed to keep on hold a file for six months and then even request for further investigations?

Secondly, the PM’s Department controls their budget. Like Abu Kassim said earlier, the government did not give the commission enough resources to do its job effectively. So the MACC is as toothless as its predecessor ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency).

But this would change if they had to report to Parliament directly. As long as BN is in power,  I don't see MACC taking action against their own.

Karma: Of all the news report I read, this gave me the biggest headache. Upon reaching the end, I couldn't find out whether the MACC is effective or not. As long as it cannot prosecute, it is a waste of resources.

Azmi: The new MACC chief seems dead serious about his role in the eradication of corruption. With this explanation, it is clear that the MACC is an independent and transparent organisation. I think it is very clear that the agency has done their job and is awaiting decisions from the public prosecutors.

The earlier those decisions are made, the better it is for the organisation. I call upon all citizens to accept the fact that the commission is only legally responsible to investigate corruption cases and that the decision to charge is the prerogative of the attorney-general as has been stipulated by the law.

But the people are awaiting swift decision on the high-profile cases and those of public interest . The public will support the fight against corruption but the MACC must be transparent and keep the public informed.

Mahathir pleased with Najib's leadership

Dr Suresh Kumar: One of the yardsticks used to measure the development of a country is how her minorities are treated.

Everyone welcomes development, but the development of a nation should include all her citizens on an equal footing.

Making one group of people developed while marginalising other groups of citizens is not development. It is pilferage of state funds that is made up of contributions from all the citizens of a country.

PJ Guy:

Yes, we have outdone other nations in terms of corruption, lack of democracy and rule of the law, injustice, authorities’ abuse of power, racial discrimination and a long list of other regressive and destructive policies and actions.

Free Suu Kyi, KL tells junta

Perak Boleh: Is the Malaysian foreign ministry meddling in the internal affairs of another country?

Doc: Since when did Malaysia's ruling government have the moral authority to lecture Burma' s ruling junta on having free, fair and inclusive elections? Better clean up our own backyard first before lecturing others about their rubbish.

SunShine1: What moral right does the government have in telling Burma what to do? It’s the pot calling the kettle black.

Daniel Tan:

I think the government should look at itself and check whether Malaysia has the credibility to be advising the Burmese junta on what to do.

At least the Burmese junta has my respect in not calling another kettle black. Foreign Affairs Minister Anifah Aman has no shame issuing such a statement against the junta.

Soapbox: Our government should ‘free’ it's own people, such as Anwar Ibrahim, before trying to convince the Burmese regime to free Aung San Suu Kyii. Let the people of Perak choose their own government.
