Bribery no longer works for BN

your say 'DAP won because there were massive votes for them. And fortunately, this massive DAP victory helps to negate or offset the lost due to vote-buying, phantom voters and the postal vote fiasco.'

DAP takes Sibu, majority 398

Kleo : Call me a sore winner, but without BN cheating with the postal votes, million-ringgit bribes (RM5 million for Rajang Park, RM1.7 million for Sibu churches, several millions for schools, RM300 each for Iban longhouse residents, etc), and voting station relocations, Pakatan Rakyat would have secured a majority in the thousands!

But thank you, Sibu, and thank you all the Pakatan election workers. Malaysians are indebted to you.

Oliver Tegjeu: I predicted a BN victory earlier based on the fact that the opposition coalition had lost its momentum and seemed shaky as a team. However, Pakatan has pulled through and I hope that this continues.

I must say that I am disgusted at the way the Election Commission has handled matters up to the final announcement. Making Malaysia wait for an extra two hours before declaring the winner certainly shows that there is a need for the EC to be a lot more professional than this.

To Pakatan, please don't let the people down by playing politics. Please go down to the grassroots and show the people that you are working for their betterment all over Malaysia.

Fairplayer: I'm impressed by the Sg Aup Ibans, who could not be bought. I hope all other Iban voters are equally honest and straight. God bless these Iban voters.

Freemen: Congratulations to the people of Sibu for voting for change. And the people of Sibu will now see whether the federal government promises will be fulfilled. The people are aware that vote-buying comes in many forms, and promises of windfall development funds suddenly appearing is insulting the intelligence of the locals.

Let's see BN walk the talk now or whether it is just talk only. The Malaysian people in general, and the Sibu folk in particular, deserve a big pat on the back for rejecting the idea that the federal government of this country belongs to BN. It belongs to the people and will always be so.

Chong Wu Ling: The majority of Sibu voters have voted for change instead of money. Bravo Sibu voters!

Kumara Ibrahim: Ibrahim Ali, please state that the Sarawakians are ungrateful and Sarawak should get out of Malaysia, let this be seconded by Dr Mahathir Mohamad. With Perkasa's panel of brilliant economic and financial strategists, coupled with Mahathir's know-how, we do not need Sarawak's petrol money.

Dood: SUPP candidate Robert Lau is upset at Malaysiakini for not "writing good articles about (him)" and then accusing Malaysiakini of being "extreme left"? Hello, Robert, just because you and your pals are used to the mainstream media's pandering to your needs and obvious biases toward the BN because of oppressive media laws, and the fact that your buddies own the mainstream media, doesn't mean everyone is like them.

There are actually people out there who write balanced, neutral reports. I guess when everything is smelling so fresh and flowery in your favour in the mainstream media, anything else would seem extremist to you.

Justice: This is not about truth, but about race. The Chinese have shown Ibrahim Ali why he needs Perkasa. I am happy DAP won, but it would have been sweeter if the mix was more varied than 67% Chinese.

It's scary - the division is taking place, and the lines are being drawn. The winner was DAP, not PKR, why? I pray for peace and happiness in this country, as at this time of our nationhood we have to take stock of how we win elections.

Sibu: Glaring flaws mar postal vote credibility

Disgusted: DAP must sue the Election Commission. The postal votes are BN's fixed deposit. How can it be possible for the returned ballot paper to be more than the number issued?

Sekigahara No Tatakai: The Election Commission has revised the voter turnout. It now says the turnout was 70% instead of 59.86%. EC, have you make up your mind yet? Such a simple calculation and you can't figure it out?

Myop101: Congratulations to DAP/Pakatan for their hard fought victory. It was a very a underhanded and dirty fight, but at least DAP managed to pull off a victory. I can see the EC taking this as an example to cite no substantial and lasting electoral reforms are required since opposition can still win at the end of the day.

Najib is going to enter a very difficult rule with pressure from his extremist right-wing party members demanding to surpress the non-Malays while he tries to project an increasingly untenable and superficial image to the international community that Malaysia is a business-friendly and progressive democratic nation.

Aramsa: DAP won because there were massive votes for them. And fortunately, this massive DAP victory helps to negate or offset the lost due to vote buying, phantom voters and the postal vote fiasco. If you take away the cheating votes, the margin could have been more.

Mixed reaction to PM's lightning visit

Jiminy Qrikert: If the Chinese voters in Sibu are anything like the Chinese voters in Hulu Selangor, then Najib has insulted them in a way that Najib will never understand.

He thinks that Umno patronage still commands the hearts and minds of the Chinese. Najib refuses to accept that there are by and large two stratas of Chinese - those in the elite strata with business concerns that are dependent on connections with BN-Umno, and the rest who do not directly, or at all, depend on any such patronage.

The first group with their hangers-on make up the 25% who still support Umno (forget MCA, they are now irrelevant). The rest, 75%, are the Chinese who no longer think it is acceptable to be spat on, cursed at and kicked around like mangy dogs, to have their mothers and womenfolk insulted, to be threatened with May 13 and then conveniently 'bought' off with a pittance when the nation is being robbed blind by the billions!

Ramachandran Muniandy: If this was India, Najib would be shown the prison for telling the voters that he will sign the cheque only on Monday once they have voted BN. The late Indira Gandhi was jailed for using the government helicopter for election (campaign) trips.

Dev: "If I get what I want, you get RM5 million." Isn't that outright bribery? Can't something be done about that? It is just a bigger version of "please don't issue the summons, I will give you RM50".

Dear Mr Prime Minister, stop insulting your rakyat. It is your duty to address the flood mitigation in Rajang Park, whatever the outcome of the election. You cannot be expecting your rakyat to barter with you, and deny them something which they are entitled to.
