PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim declined today to divulge any more details on his allegations that millions of ringgit were offered to some of the party's defected lawmakers, saying he is “enjoying” the media buzz on the matter.

Pressed for an answer from the media and to reveal the evidence that he claims will expose the sweet deals involved in the defection, Anwar ( left ) said:

“I'm not dragging (the issue). Why are you all so excited about this? Why (aren't) you not asking what happened to the VK Lingam tapes? Why did you not ask (the government) on the (cancellation of) subsidy that affect so many other people?

“You should be asking and questioning (the others why, when) Anwar has adduced the VK Lingam tapes and investigations (have been) conducted, but, why no action?

“I want to have these answers first. You can say whatever you like, (it) doesn't matter. I will enjoy myself. I will take my time.

“I want the response from all these players, and I want Umno to respond. Then I will adduce the evidence,” he said.

Amusing those present in the press conference, Anwar even broke into a tune, singing a line from Elvis Presley’s 'Devil in disguise'.

“(You) look like an angel, walk like an angle, talk like an angel but you're a devil in guise,” he sang.

Let them have their say, he repeated, the evidence will follow.

On other matters, Anwar said among the issues being tackled by the PKR’s top leadership were the restructuring of the party's main body and the appointment of party members into local authorities.

Anwar said that the party was looking into beefing up its leadership with a new line-up.

“I will discuss with the president (Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) and deputy president (Syed Husin Ali) and we will see how we could strengthen the party leadership with new appointments.

The issues, he said, will be discussed and deliberated by the relevant committees within the next few days and decide on them within about a week’s time.

In defense of Khalid Ibrahim

Earlier, Anwar in his closing speech to PKR's sixth congress in Kota Bharu pleaded for the 2010 delegates present to give Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim a fighting chance.

“When someone asked me, how do I measure someone’s credibility? I said that it is very hard (to determine who is going to be) a leader who is sincere and clean (and) his track record is not corrupt,” said Anwar.

While admitting that the Selangor has its share of problems, Anwar said that the country's stagnant economy was also the cause for the slow rate of policy-implementation.

“The main problem is the slow implementation of the economic policies, because (of) the country’s dismal economy, and investments are not coming in. Therefore, Selangor must be more aggressive to ensure that projects approval are expedited,” he said.

The government had come up to a dead end at almost every corner – state universities, government agencies and religious bodies, said Anwar.

“We are still faced with problems with the religious council. I'm not using this as an excuse for not performing... You cannot tell the people (that) we are always facing problems. The people want answers,” he said.

Nevertheless, he added, there was a pressing need for solutions.

Taking the criticism as a reminder for himself as the Selangor government’s economic advisor, Anwar said there was still room for improvement in the struggle to weed out corruption.

“We promised a clean and transparent government," he conceded. (But on this score) Khalid has been successful because he runs a clean government,” said Anwar.

The state of Selangor was a far cry from the federal government, Anwar noted, which has led the country to near-bankruptcy due to corruption.

“Ministers and menteris besar are taking people’s money, shares, land and timber... This is a war we are fighting against corrupt leaders.

“This would not happen under Khalid,” he added.
