2Malaysia: Survey tells us nothing new

your say 'When you religiously pit one race against another, you get 2Malaysia. No amount of sloganeering and foaming from the mouth will alter what the man in the street sees everyday.'

Unity survey finds 2Malaysia

DontPlayGod: After nearly 50 years of racist and ‘Ketuanan Melayu' indoctrination of the Malays by Umno, what do you expect? The role played by BTN (Biro Tatanegara), Utusan Malaysia and Umno in brainwashing the Malays to hate the non-Malays (particularly the Chinese) and to treat them as a threat, why are we talking about 1Malaysia for?

One can't change one's thinking after 50 years of brainwashing to hate, and now tell them to love. People are not computers where you can change a programme by just hitting a different button.

Malaysia Sakit: The results of the survey doesn't tell us anything new. When you religiously pit one race against another, you get 2Malaysia. No amount of sloganeering and foaming from the mouth will alter what the man in the street sees everyday.

One result is surprising though. Despite Umno's racial posturing, a whopping 39 percent of non-bumiputeras still believe that 1Malaysia is a sincere effort by the government to unite races.

Fade 2 Grey: When the DPM puts Malay first and Malaysian second, what do you expect? Seriously, the PM and DPM do not walk their talk and 1Malaysia is just a gimmick for political mileage.

Man: You don't have to be a rocket scientist or even waste a single sen on a survey to tell you that when you have dichotomised the population into two apartheid-like social categories or castes, there will be 2Malaysia.

Nathan M: I wonder why they did not ask non-Malays about the NEP? One set of questions for Malays and another for non-Malays? That itself indicates 2Malaysia, doesn't it?

Swipenter: There is no special race in this world. Maybe some think that they are special by the way of constant indoctrination through race and religion.

Can anyone tell me who the original human inhabitants on this earth were? If you are a firm believer in evolution, then monkeys and apes should be awarded special status since scientists think that they were our ancestors. If you believe in God then please tell us, did your God create your race to be special among human races?

YF: Racism may be an issue 50 years ago almost everywhere in the world but it is not so much an issue today. Unfortunately for this part of the world, it is still an issue and we are all suffering because the very people who have been receiving the benefits of a government economic improvement programme based on race refuse to acknowledge that it has created more negative effects rather than positive ones.

Be it corruption, disunity or fear, there is no way 1Malaysia can ever be achieved when all Malaysians are not equal. The US has shown the world that a minority African American (African Americans make up about 12 percent of the US population) can be president. That's the legacy of a nation that believes "all men are created equal". We are nowhere near that.

Mohd Hazwan: I pity Najib as he is sincere about 1Malaysia. But sad to say that the irreparable damage is caused by the BTN and Perkasa, time and again. I hope fair-minded people will stand up for Najib's 1Malaysia.

Koh Kim Theng: Like Hazwan, I, too, pity Najib. It is certainly not easy to achieve 1Malaysia under present condition. It'll be a miracle if he succeeds. Personally, I think we have to change our thinking - get rid of old thinking, old culture, old beliefs and old habits.

Joe: Malaysia has been practising apartheid, not by law, but by institutionalised racial discrimination. Through race-based politics and one-sided implementation of the NEP, the ethnic communities are divided - Malays on one side and non-Malays on the other.

The cleavages which separate the races coincide, among other things, with religion; and this religious difference is exploited to the hilt by the politicians. So it should not surprise anyone that Malaysia today is a divided country, a nation within a nation.

As to the attitude of the non-Malays towards Prime Minister Najib Razak's 1Malaysia, I, for one, am unconvinced it's real. Najib talks national unity, but his party endorses the work of Perkasa in spreading race hatred using the Chinese as the bogeyman.

Umno plays on the fear of the Malays using the Chinese as a threat, rallying the Malays to unite under Umno. And at the same time, Umno spooks the non-Malays in supporting BN-Umno to protect them from the Malay extremists.

Kgen: From the two sample questions given in this article it is clear that this survey is a load of bull. The questions are not neutral but designed to elicit a certain emotional response.

Cala: I am curious. Why is it Merdeka Centre has not been interested in getting some feedback from the bumiputera respondents on the relative support given to Umno and Pakatan Rakyat respectively?

Ferdtan: Why didn't Merdeka Centre ask this pertinent question on the implementation of NEP for the Malays: Has NEP actually benefitted the common Malays/bumiputeras?

Anonymous: I am not interested in the results of this survey but rather on the methodology of it. The methodology tells us how hard-up Umno is on gaining back Malay support. I can tell you, they are not making any headway on this. It's payback time for Umno.
