The United Malay National Organisation or Umno, the dominant political party in the country, turned 57 today.

The party has more than 2.4 million members currently; more than half are women. Umno's membership structure has also been fine-tuned to reflect the changing political and economic environment.

According to a veteran Umno leader, the party's 'accomodative' dominance over the years has made the party more acceptable to all races.
