University Malaya Pro-Mahasiswa (Pro-M) candidate Masturah Abu Bakar, who is contesting in the upcoming campus polls is feared kidnapped after she went missing yesterday evening.
She disappeared at about 4.15pm whilst campaigning in the Pantai Permai Apartment complex which many off-campus UM students are staying at.
Masturah's disappearance was noticed by fellow student Nurhanis Wahidah Mohd Mansor who accompanied Masturah canvassing for votes.
Speaking to reporters at a emergency press conference in the university today, she related that they were between blocks D and E of the apartment complex when Masturah excused herself to purchase credit for her phone, but failed to return.
Nurhanis then lodged a report at about 12.20pm last night at the Pantai police station when her friend did not turn up after six hours and attempts at finding her along with a search party of locals proved in vain.
Contacted by Malaysiakini earlier today, Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia chairperson Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin confirmed the matter.
"She received messages containing threats, prior to her disappearance," he revealed.
However he was unsure if the threats were related to the ongoing UM campus elections, which has been marred with several incidents of sabotage and vandalism if not yet violence.
Last polls even saw students roughed up by opposing parties in the campus electoral process.
Meanwhile another police was lodged at the same police station at 11.40am today by Masturah's campaign assistant Rohayu Rosli, after being threatened via phone not to report her friend's disappearance to the cops.
Tomorrow is polling day for UM which will see 43 seats contested.
