Reading the news that matters has never been easier, with the launch of malaysiakini's new short-messaging service (SMS) payment system.

In a statement today, the online news organisation said daily access to malaysiakini news content is available for a fee of RM1.50, payable via mobile telephone services operated by Maxis, Digi and Celcom.

Malaysiakini

CEO Premesh Chandran said the new payment method has been introduced to enable easier access to the website.

"It is similar to picking up a newspaper at the newsstand. It is great for readers who are not yet ready for a longer term subscription to malaysiakini ," he said.

Accessing content

To subscribe , just send an SMS with the word 'Mkini' to telephone number 32300.

Malaysiakini will send a return SMS with a special login code. Enter this code can into the SMS login box on the website to begin the 24-hour access period to the online content.

"The cost of RM1.50 plus SMS charges will appear on the customer's next telephone bill. Payment is easy, everything is done by SMS," said Premesh.

Malaysiakini

launched its first subscription service last February for its features and columns section. This was extended to the news section in August. However, access to the letters section has remained free of charge.

Subscription fees are tiered according to access period - RM10 for a month subscription, RM50 for six months and RM100 for 12 months. Readers may also purchase the premium access package at RM300 per year for access to the website's archives as well.

Payment for these services may be made via credit card, cheque, e-coupons, Maybank2U or cash (only during office hours at the Malaysiakini office at 2-4 Jalan Bangsar Utama, Kuala Lumpur).
