Karpal Singh, the lead counsel in the Sodomy II trial, is mulling a move to submit an application to cite Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for contempt.

This follows Najib’s comments in pressuring Anwar Ibrahim to give a DNA sample for testing.

Today, Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah told Karpal to make a formal application on the matter.

NONE Karpal ( left ) had said that several individuals, including the prime minister, may have committed contempt in commenting on the issue.

Outside the court, Karpal said he is seriously considering filing the application.

“By right it should be the judge who should initiate this but (following what the judge) had said we are seriously considering this,” he said.

“There have been several individuals who have made such statements, as if pressuring the judiciary. We will file (the application) against the big fish, general (Najib),” he said.

Karpal said the judge had issued a stern warning in open court against parties committing contempt in commenting about the case, or they would face the music.

Last week, Karpal had issued a warning to those concerned, including Parti Kita president Zaid Ibrahim, to refrain from making such statements.

Support for Anwar

There was a strong police presence outside the Kuala Lumpur court complex in Jalan Duta, and also in the lobby in anticipation of a protest.

More than 200 NONE PKR supporters showed up in support of Anwar, against strong demands by political rivals who have urged the politician to handover his DNA sample for testing.

PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin called on the people to respect the court as we have an adversarial system.

"PKR Youth will also be involved in a road show to explain that Anwar need not give his sample as, in this court, a person is innocent until proven guilty,” said Shamsul, who is a lawyer.

“It is the prosecution who must prove their case. It is not for the accused to give a sample. That is the way it works."

Shamsul said PKR Youth would explain this to the people so that they can better understand and gauge the claims made.
