Northern Region Lorry Transport Association president Yusoff Ismail has announced a 10 to 15 percent hike in lorry rentals with effect from June 1, following the reduction in diesel subsidies and increase in the cost of spare parts.

“It is 10 percent more for long distances and 15 percent for short trips, which makes it among the lowest rates compared to other states,” he told reporters in Alor Setar today.

Yusoff said the association had also applied to the federal government to reduce or waive altogether road tax for commercial vehicles and reduce highway tolls by 50 percent as trade offs for the reduced oil subsidy.

He cited Thailand as an example, where there are no road tax on commercial vehicles or tolls.
