PKR vice-president N Surendran cried foul as police decided to question him when he accompanied PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim’s bodyguard Fayyahd Afiq Albakqry to record a statement at Travers police station at 3pm today.

Surendran is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for allegedly making statements that would jeopardise public order outside Dang Wangi police headquarters on July 20.

“I have been informed that the police lodged a report against me in relation to (my comments made in) an article in The Malaysian Insider that said what happened at the KL Sentral underpass (on July 9) is attempted murder,” he said.

Despite the questioning, the PKR veep insisted that he had done nothing wrong.

“What I said earlier was that the circumstances in which the tear gas were fired into the underpass can cause great danger for those in the underpass and I asked for the matter to be categorised as attempted murder.

NONE “I stand by that statement irrespective how how many investigations they decide to institute against me,” he said.

Surendran ( left ), who was questioned for 45 minutes, expressed disappointment and accused the police force of not wanting to take responsibility for its operations during the electoral reform rally by Bersih 2.0.

“I am disappointed that instead of investigating the wrongful acts of the police in firing the tear gas, instead they are investigating me now.

“The thrust of the questions seems not to be on investigating the incident at the KL Sentral underpass but more towards exonorating the police of blame,” he said.

Among the questions asked by the police was whether the PKR veep knew about tear gas and if he had encountered it before.

Statement recorded from Anwar’s bodyguard

Earlier, police had recorded Fayyahd’s statement for close to two hours after he was summoned to the Travers police station.

NONE He had lodged a police report on July 20 at Dang Wangi police district headquarters over injuries he sustained during the Bersih 2.0 rally.

Fayyahd’s ( right ) cheek was severely injured during the police crackdown at KL Sentral after he was hit by a tear gas canister while trying to shield Anwar.

The 25-year-old bodyguard’s cheekbones were shattered and had to be braced with titanium in a reconstructive facial surgical operation recently.

Fellow legal counsel and Subang MP R Sivarasa reiterated his call for the police to investigate what transpired at the underpass.

“A second canister narrowly missed Anwar’s head after the first hit Fayyahd’s face. It was clear that the canisters were being fired at people’s heads,” he said.

The other two lawyers who are part of Fayyahd’s legal team are PKR legal bureau chief Latheefa Koya and Fadiah Nadwa Fikri of Lawyers for Liberty.
