More than 27,000 made citizens since 2008

In a written reply in Parliament, Hishammuddin said the figure refers to those naturalised up to last August.
He had said this in response to a question by Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai) who asked Hishammuddin to state the number of people granted citizenship according to parliamentary constituency.
In response, the minister said that his ministry is not privy to that information.
The issue arose following multiple claims that non-citizens were found on the electoral roll.
Most of these were later confirmed by the National Registration Department as naturalised citizens, and that the NRD’s database is outdated.
The opposition has also made claims that citizenship were granted in return for allegiance to BN - an allegation the Home Ministry refutes.
