Hulu Selangor MP P Kamalanathan has proposed that “a neutral caretaker government” be appointed once parliament is dissolved for the general election.
This was one of several initiatives he presented at the second meeting of the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reform in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The government, he said, should appoint a person or group of persons perceived to be neutral.
The proposal, along with several other suggestions, was posted on his website, http://www.pkamalanathan.com .
Kamalanathan also proposed the use of inedible ink, reforming the postal ballot system, extending the campaign period and providing all political parties with fair access to the media.
He said there was a need for the Election Commission to raise awareness on the difference between overseas voting, early voting and the postal ballot.
Kamalanathan also felt that election expenses should be independently audited.
The establishment of the PSC on electoral reform was announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on Aug 15.
He had said then that it was “to reach a consensus in facing the next election without any suspicion about any manipulation by the government”.
