An Umno supreme council member has questioned the support Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil received at the wing's annual general assembly (AGM) earlier this week.

"I don't know how much was the support (for Shahrizat). No delegate has made it clear what their support was for.

"Support for the party, yes, we know (about that)," said Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin, when met on the sidelines of the Umno AGM today.

Bung Mokhtar remained unconvinced when a journalist informed him that the Wanita delegates gave Shahrizat a standing ovation when she launched a broadside at the Opposition on the issue of National Feedlot Corporation (NFC).

The outspoken MP had earlier reiterated his call to Shahrizat to consider stepping down because she had become a liability to the party, despite giving an explanation to the Wanita Umno delegates on Wednesday.

'Umno must not be involved in the controversy'

"This is not a question of explanation. This is not a question of who is wrong. The question is the level of the people's acceptance (for Shahrizat).

"I don't want the party to be involved (in the controversy) because of an individual, as Umno is facing the general election soon. We can't have elements that can weaken the party," he said.

However, when asked whether his stand was shared by other Umno leaders, he declined to comment.

"Go ask them, I can't comment...," said the Sabah MP, flashing a smile.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has been the target of the Opposition, which has claimed that her husband, Mohamad Salleh Ismail - the NFC executive chairperson - had abused the RM250 million soft loan issued by the government.

However, Shahrizat maintained that she had nothing to do with the company and refused to answer any of the Opposition's allegations.
