Polls reforms must be implemented before GE13

YOURSAY 'The PSC must make sure that the key changes are implemented so that Malaysia can boast of a clean and fair election.'

Don't prejudge PSC report, Maximus tells Bersih

Swkdayaks: Bersih, be very, very firm. Don't allow the BN, through the PSC (parliamentary select committee), to dictate terms. This is our last chance.

The PSC recommendations are one thing, and whether the EC (Election Commission) and the BN comply is another. If there is no firm commitment from the EC and BN to comply, then go for Bersih 3.0.

In this coming polls, the only way  the BN can win is to cheat as the voters are already fed up with the BN and want a change of government.

James1067: Time and money was spent, even trips made to Europe to learn about the electoral systems there. The trips were not necessary as we know what our problems are.

Let's hope that this will not just remain a report and that whatever recommendations made will be carried through.

The recommendations should be implemented in this coming election, not a vague promise to do it at the next election.

Anonymous: PSC, whether you had worked very hard or not is inconsequential. The rakyat only want to have the electoral rolls cleaned up before the next general election.

This PSC looks like a delaying tactic. Meanwhile, more and more fraudulent exercises have been carried out to the disadvantage of the opposition parties.

The rakyat has no ‘nambikei' (trust) in the ability of the PSC to clean up the electoral rolls.

Vchange: Which job does not require anyone to work hard? We are all duty bound to be industrious and diligent.

Besides, PSC must exert pressure on EC to ensure that the recommended actions are implemented before the next general election or else Bersih 3.0 must be held to show people's power to the BN.

Oscar Kilo: I am not prejudging the PSC report. I am prejudging the implementation of it. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that Umno will implement only those recommendations that are inconsequential to the ruling party.

Free and fair elections? Ain't gonna happen, dude.

Jedi_Who: People will read the PSC report come Monday, but if it amounts to nothing that can be implemented before GE13 or if the ruling government and its sleazy concubine EC do not do the right thing, then Bersih 3.0 is what our country needs.

We will not be forced to accept a ruling government that has not been fairly elected nor given a real mandate by the rakyat of Malaysia.

Quigonbond: Don't worry PSC chief Maximus Ongkili, we are not as moronic as Perkasa or the Umno mat rempit.

We will study the report and make our dissatisfaction known, then probably give a week or two for further implementation of the reforms, and hold our rally. You have only yourselves to blame.

Further, all the ‘goodwill' generated by previous approvals for assemblies to support the idea that the Peaceful Assembly Act is a great piece of progressive legislation will get washed down the drain because we know you won't tolerate a massive street procession even if it is meant for our fundamental democratic rights.

Anonymous: BN has lied so often, that even if they speak the truth, no one believes it, and that seriously is a credibility problem. The voters must bury them once and for all.

Polls reform PSC needs to iron out 5 more issues

Slumdog: The state of Queensland in Australia had an election on a weekend. It has 89 seats in the state parliament.

Guess what? Every electorate had approximately between 29,500 and 31,000 voters. None of shambles we see in Malaysia where there are 9,000 voters for the seat of Putrajaya and 110,000 voters for the seat of Kampar.

The EC desperately needs to clean out its database and as other commentators have said, it only takes minimal software programming to be able to identify multiple registrations of the same person, multiple voters registered at the same address, dead voters, etc, etc.

The EC, in cahoots with Umno, is in such a powerful position that they will deny or cheat Malaysians of a change in government. This unfortunately will see Umno-BN returning to power as an illegitimate government.

Kairos: The work of the PSC has to be commended. They have done a good job. Having gone so far, they must now exercise the will and the resolve to not only beat the dateline for the report, but also cross the finish line and finish well.

The key is implementation. Its job is not over once the report is submitted. The committee must make sure that the key changes are implemented so that Malaysia can boast of a clean and fair election. If not, all the PSC's efforts will be wasted.

Anonymous: There are 79,098 voters in 354 addresses - can't we have a ‘habeas corpus'?

If none come forward to clear the matter, send them a letter by hand (only 354 locations at present, not at all difficult) or by registered mail to inform them that their registrations are considered dubious and will be deleted.
