Election reform coalition Bersih 2.0 today dared the Election Commission (EC) to stand in the general election if the commission claimed it enjoys the support of the majority of the rakyat.

"The EC is not voted in by the majority. They don't stand for election.

"If they want to talk about that (issue of majority), ask them to stand in the election," said Bersih 2.0 steering committee member P Subramaniam.

He was asked on the EC's repeated argument that its detractors do not enjoy the support of the majority.

Earlier on, EC deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar claimed that the EC still enjoyed majority support .

In response to Bersih 2.0's resignation call, Wan Ahmad urged the coalition to respect the federal constitution as the election commissioners were appointed by the Agong as stipulated in the charter.

 Constitutional rights stolen

During today's press conference, another steering committee member Maria Chin said that the 500,000 participants that Bersih 2.0 targeted for the rally on Apr 28, stood for "the opinion of the rakyat".

The various electoral frauds revealed, she said, proved that the EC had stolen the constitutional rights of the people by "cheating" and "rigging" the election.

K Amurugam, another steering committee member, further pointed out that the EC's argument of majority representation did not hold water because even if only one voter was denied his or her voting rights, the EC would have failed in carrying out its constitutional responsibility.

NONE Hence the committee, in an official statement released today, reiterated its call for all election commissioners to resign .

"Instead of securing one person one vote, the EC has disenfranchised the rakyat's votes through its complicity in the fraud as shown above.

"To allow the present EC to continue in their office will only bring about a dirty, unfair and undemocratic general election," said the statement read out by Bersih 2.0 co-chairperson A Samad Said ( right ).

Earlier during the press conference, the committee revealed more irregularities in the latest electoral roll, including 24,105 voters of Sabah and Sarawak who were found having double registration in Selangor.
