MCA has denied a claim that it had interfered in the awarding of a contract for the Automated Enforcement System (AES), a computerised camera-based traffic summons system by the Road Transport Department (RTD).

NONE "The MCA would like to make it clear that the party is (neither) involved in, nor has a role to play in the company that was given the contract for AES," party president Dr Chua Soi Lek said in a statement today.

Financial daily The Edge, in a report today had claimed that Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd - one of two companies awarded the contract to implement the system for RTD - is linked to MCA.

Describing the claim as malicious, Chua called on the company to come forward to clear the air as well.

"The RTD should also reveal the date of the contract awarded to Beta Tegap and other necessary details to avoid further confusion and misunderstanding," he said.

However, the report did include a denial by an unnamed official aligned to the company.

The official explained that the long-delayed project had gone through three transport ministers and two prime ministers. This alone would have posed difficulty for it to maintain links if it had indeed obtained the contract through connections.

According to the report, the project which was conceived in 2005 but has yet to be implemented, will see the two private companies install cameras at 831 traffic 'black spots' for RTD.

In the first tier, the companies will be entitled to RM16 for every summons issued for up to 5 million summonses.

In the second tier, they will be entitled to 50 percent of the remaining revenue, capped at up to RM270 million.

In the third tier, they will receive 7.5 percent of the balance of summonses paid.
