The police logic in killing three suspected robbers in the April 14 incident is unacceptable as they could have shot their limbs if it had been in self-defence, said PKR vice-president N.Surendran.

In the morning of that day, police shot dead siblings Aidi Noor Hafizal othman, Noor Azman Othman and friend Ahmad Soufa Ahman at Billion Roundabout, Cheras, after a car chase.

They were suspected of having been involved in a Shah Alam jewellery shop heist on April 6.

According to the City Criminal Investigation Department chief Ku Chin Wah, one of the suspects, on the front passenger seat, opened fire at the police after their vehicle rammed into two other cars while attempting to escape.

Police returned fire, killing two of them at the scene while the other died of his wounds at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Some eight family members of the deceased suspects lodged police reports at the Dang Wangi police headquarters yesterday, in a bid to find justice.

Accompanied Lawyers for Liberty's Latheefa Koya and Surendran , they arrived at the station at around 2.30pm before leaving two hours later.

NONE When met outside the police station, Othman Yusoff ( right ), the father of Aidi and Azman, said his sons had 11 and 8 bullet wounds respectively on their bodies.

He said Aidi had a fatal wound on his head while the elder brother had sustained one each on the chest and neck.among others.

"If (the police) just wanted to nab them, they could have cornered them. Why take their lives ?" he said.

‘Police attempted murder'

Questioning the police's justifications for shooting dead the suspects that day, Surendran lambasted them for  trotting out the same excuse every time a similar incident occurred.

"If it is truth that they did it out of self-defence, how come there were so many shots on the deceased's bodies? "Why couldn't they shoot their arms or legs?

"If it is truth that they carried parang or pistol, why is it all but not one or two of them were shot dead?" he asked

"This proves that the police were attempting to murder, but not to stop them," he added.

NONE Surendran, ( left ) a prominent activist, also pointed out a steep hike in police shootings since 2008.

"Prior to that, there was only 10 to 20 persons being shot dead every year, but it has increased to 82 in 2008 and 88 in 2009," he said, citing police statistics.

The families and the lawyers now demand that the police setup an independent panel from Bukit Aman to probe the matter and the police involved be suspended, pending the investigations.

"We also want Ku to be suspended because of the serious allegations which is inconsistent with the family's account," Surendran said.

The siblings's mother Sosni Jan Sarwar Khan could not help but break into tears when recounting what happened to her sons.

She said the sons should have been allowed to stand trial and appropriate punishment meted out if found guilty.

"But they just shot (my sons) dead, do they have evidence to prove they had done wrong?"she asked.

Othman, when asked, replied that his sons would not have committed such a crime.

He admitted that Azman had been taking drugs but not to the extent of robbing.

Meanwhile, Azman's wife Laila Shahid came to her husband's defence, saying that he had left their home in Kajang half an hour before the robbery took place.

"He was taking our daughter to school, and I have the security guards in school and apartment to prove that.

"In 30 minutes time, how could he travel all the way to Shah Alam on a bicycle?" she asked.

The group has vowed to continue exerting pressure until there is a response.
