DAP chairperson Karpal Singh said he is initiating defamation proceedings against former PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa over the former’s purported stand on hudud and Islam.

“The statement by Nasharudin that I’m not only against hudud, but also against Islam, is irresponsible, baseless and mischievous,” he said in a statement today.

    

A newspaper report today quoted Nasharudin as questioning PAS’ political alliance with those who were “against Islam”.

    

The article quoted him as saying that “Karpal Singh is not only against hudud but also against Islam”.

In response, Karpal Singh, who is Bukit Gelugor member of parliament, said that Nasharudin’s statement that he (Karpal Singh) was against Islam did not have the backing of PAS.

Nasharudin, he said, was now a “minor digit” in PAS and that his public statements could not reflect the stand of PAS.

“In view of the serious allegation made against me, I have no alternative but to commence defamation proceedings against Nasharudin,” Karpal Singh said.
