The police are not demotivated by the recent decisions of the courts that statutory rape offenders be bound over, said inspector-general of police Ismail Omar today.

"Our task is to investigate and give all the investigation papers to the prosecutors," he added.

NONE Ismail ( right ) was asked to comment on public concern including those from the legal fraternity, over former national bowler Nor Afizal Azizan being bound over for five years by the Court of Appeal for statutory rape on a 13 year old girl.

Yesterday, a 22-year-old school dropout in Georgetown was also bound over after admitting to statutory rape on 12-year-old girlfriend.

As a result several child rights groups have voiced their outrage over what the court described as a suspended sentence by the Court of Appeal president Justice Md Raus Sharif.

Md Raus in his written judgment on Monday said despite escaping a custodial sentence, Nor Afizal’s criminal record will be blemished, with the offence being recorded.

"We recognise that statutory rape cases are social problems. I will have to look further into these judgments. I will then discuss this issue further," he said.

Asked to comments on the alleged incest case being investigated by the Pahang police involving a politician said to be affiliated to the opposition, Ismail said police investigate all cases and this was not based on political affiliations.

“If a police report is lodged, we will investigate it. Our task is to investigate,” he said.

“However, I have not been briefed on this case and I cannot comment further.”
