Go to polls if PM is confident on his 'reforms'

YOURSAY ‘Why still keep on talking about them? If you are so confident with the reforms, just call for the election now.'

Najib: Law reform has been human rights-friendly

your say Gerard Lourdesamy: If PM Najib Razak is sincere, the government should ratify all the UN human rights conventions with or without reservations in accordance with the federal constitution and bring them into force under our domestic law through a Human Rights Act.

There must be a serious review of the Peaceful Assembly Act, the Printing Presses and Publications Act, the Societies Act, the Sedition Act, the Universities and University Colleges Act, the Trades Union Act, the Police Act, the Immigration Acts, the Multimedia and Communications Act and the Broadcasting Act, amongst others, to ensure that they are genuinely compatible with international human rights standards and practices.

The national human rights commission must be bolstered to give it more bite and powers. The Election Commission must be made truly independent, impartial and empowered.

The Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) must be set up. The Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission (EAIC) should instead be revamped into an ombudsman. Can Najib deliver this?

Lin Wenquan: Najib's constant harping on 'reforms' has only prostituted the word.

All the so-called repeals of the dreadful acts against a humane society have in reality been superseded by even more draconian amendments that are cleverly (that's what he thinks) brushed over by benign-sounding names which are in fact misnomers.

In short, his claims of reforms are fallacious and the old cliché of 'old wine in a new bottle' is most apt to describe them.

NewMalaysia: Why keep on talking about the reforms then? If you are so confident with the reforms done, just call for the election now and see if the people agree with you.

Ksn: Yes Najib, you are right. The people will judge you by what you do and not by what you say.

What you have been saying do not carry weight with the people anymore because you, your Umno Baru carry out government policies that are exactly opposite from what you say.

Now about what you have you done, let's see. What did you do about corruption, cronyism, abuses of laws and public funds, about extremists like the two Alis whose remarks cause disharmony, about the RM100 billion man's uttering of racism, about discrimination of the non-Malays in the civil services? Shall I go on, Najib?

The people have changed including Malays, they are not stupid as the RM100 billion man says.

Cantabrigian: What an embarrassment. The prime minister of Malaysia is trying to bluff a hall full of Malaysians and international legal practitioners about how his government has "walked the talk" when Bersih 3.0 participants were not even allowed to assemble peacefully and the opposition politicians were not allowed to talk about their political aspirations. A true waste of oxygen.

Jimmy Ng: Liar, liar, pants on fire. Najib doesn't seem to bat any eyelid whenever he lies. Maybe it is because he has become such an expert at it already. Cakap tak serupa bikin, bikin tak serupa cakap (talk differs from action, action differs from talk).

The world and the rakyat are not fools to believe all these deceitful lies anymore. Please pack your bags and go.

DR.JAG#04496187: Banishment Act repealed? In that case, Mr PM, why not welcome Chin Peng (former leader of Communist Party of Malaya) back to his country, and have the Agong bestow a Tunship on this great man? Then, you would have walked the talk and not balked.

Foo: Mr Prime Minister, you are so detached from the ground. Why not take a walk on your own, if you dare, and talk to the men on the street? The answers you get is definitely going to shock you.

Keturunan Malaysia: PM sir, you still don't get it. We rarely, if not at all, have any quarrel with any good laws including good reforms of same.

We have plenty to quarrel with those who are entrusted to see that the laws are applied properly, correctly and transparently, without fear or favour. Please sir, get it right for just once.

ACR: Unfortunately, the series of repealed Statutes and the Acts that replaced them are an eyewash.

For example, the Police Act which made it an offence for five or more people to gather without a police permit has now been replaced with the Peaceful Assembly Act that imposes numerous conditions, one of which being there cannot be an assembly within 50 metres of a place of worship.

If only the intentions in the original Acts were respected, there would be no need for all these bullshit.

Relax: This guy is so thick skinned, he would make a good opposition leader.

Wanderer: Why was a 19-year-old youth handcuffed when she surrendered herself to the authorities? Was it because she stepped on your distasteful face?

James Dean: Do one thing right and I give you my vote... eradicate corruption at all levels, beginning with you.

Mushiro: It is not for Najib to praise his reforms as per the Malay saying angkat bakul sendiri (blow your own trumpet), which Najib is so fond of doing.

If his reforms were up to the mark, then they should withstand the critiques of NGOs and independent observers.

As it is now, Najib's reforms fail to impress in spite of the many praises by the biased mainstream media. No amount of selling by Najib can improve the public perception.

Odin: Yes, your law reform has been human rights-friendly indeed - but friendly to the rights of only humans in, and those who support, BN.

Freemsia: Yes, and bully human rights group Suaram non-stop. So much for your reforms.
