Sarawak DAP has refuted allegations by a PAS leader that the party held prayers seeking the formation of a Christian state during its thanksgiving dinner after the 2011 Sarawak state elections.

"The allegations are untrue, malicious and irresponsible," the party's Sarawak chairperson Wong Ho Leng hit out during a press conference in the Parliament lobby today.

Wong stressed that the dinner, which was for election volunteers, and which he himself attended, was simply to express thanks and to honour the volunteers, and that no prayer session was conducted.

He related that the dinner was attended not only by volunteers but also state PKR and PAS leaders who came in “substantial numbers” and those who attended like himself will know that there was no prayer session whatsoever.

Wong said that the party will lodge a police report over the matter and urged the police to investigate and take appropriate action.

The party also called for Nasharuddin to withdraw his allegation and apologise to the DAP for the “wrongful and malicious accusation”.

Sarawak DAP secretary Chong Chien Jien said the party viewed the allegations by former PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa as serious, but will not be initiating any action against the errant Islamic party leader at Pakatan Rakyat level.

"We will leave it to PAS to take appropriate action”.

NONE Asked if Nasharuddin’s ( right ) allegations will create a rift between PAS and their party, the DAP leaders brushed aside any negative effects.

“It will not effect (the ties), it was his own view that is not shared by the party,” chimed in the party’s national publicity secretary Tony Pua.

The DAP leaders were responding to Nasharuddin’s allegations yesterday while delivering his working paper at the National Islamic Missionary Movement Seminar at Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

He had alleged that after the Sarawak state elections, to celebrate their victory, the DAP held a thanksgiving event where, among the things prayed for, was for Malaysia to be a Christian state.

“Because they have won big, so they prayed for Malaysia to be a Christian state,” Nasharuddin said.
