The police said anti-Lynas group Himpunan Hijau has to notify the force if its intended gathering at Dataran Merdeka, but they have yet to do so.

azlan “They (Himpunan Hijau) need to send notification to police under Section 9 (1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, but they didn’t,” Dang Wangi OCPD Zainuddin Ahmad told Malaysiakini in an SMS.

However he was unable to comment further, as he was in a meeting at the time.

Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib also said that the green marchers need to apply for permission to use the Dataran.

Activists from Himpunan Hijau who are currently on their 300km march from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur plan to end their long march at Dataran Merdeka at noon this Sunday, where they will spend the night and use the same venue to receive MPs on Monday.

Meanwhile, it was reported that more than 100 containers containing rare earth ore have arrived in Kuantan port near midnight under unusually heavy police presence.

Lynas Corp, which operates the rare earth plant in Gebeng, Kuantan, confirmed the arrival in a brief statement.

Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack, who had previously threatened to block Kuantan port to prevent the import of rare earth ore, said they will continue their march to Dataran Merdeka and decide what they will do next on the import of rare earth ores.
