Two Automatic Enforcement System (AES) cameras in Sepang, Selangor, were reportedly vandalised with red paint sprayed on its lenses.

Sinar Harian 's online edition reported yesterday that one affected camera is located at the 6.6km point of the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), while the other is located at the 301.7km point of the North-South Highway (Kuala Lumpur-bound).

The incident is believed to have occurred yesterday morning. The Malay-language daily's checks found that the camera appeared to be still attempting to photograph speeding drivers as its flash was still working.

"The AES at that location was found to be not working and when checked, red paint was found on the sensor. The contractor affected immediately reported the incident at the Salak Tinggi police station.

"The police have no suspects for the incident at the moment and will investigate immediately," the daily reported Sepang OCPD Imran Abdul Rahman saying.

No offences recorded

He added that the contractor found that cameras failed to record any offences since 2.15am and the police would investigate the matter under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which is for "committing mischief and thereby causing damage to the amount of RM25 (and above)".

Meanwhile, the daily also quoted Selangor exco member for local government Ronnie Liu  ( right ) as condemning the vandalism.

"This is a show of public dissatisfaction towards the AE system. It is considered unfair and burdensome, but I do not condone this action," he reportedly said.

Liu had previously announced that the same two cameras would be dismantled by the Sepang Municipal Council because the contractors failed to obtain a development order from the state to erect the " illegal structures " .

However, Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim later announced that the cameras would be covered up instead.

This was later delayed to give the contractor 30 days from MPS' notice on Dec 6 to cover the cameras, as required by law.
