The Education Ministry has asked the police to investigate the incident where some irresponsible people had resorted to circulating Bibles in English to students, including Muslim students, of a school in Penang, said Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.

NONE He said the ministry was leaving it to the police to get to the bottom of the matter as proselytisation of Muslims was against the law in the country.

He told this to reporters after attending a ceremony to hand over the RM100 Early School Aid at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bunohan in Tumpat today.

He was commenting on news reports yesterday which quoted Penang Mukabuku Association president Salleh Ismail as saying that two men were seen circulating copies of the Bible to Muslim students outside a school in Jelutong on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Puad said the Johor Education Department would instructed to probe complaints that a Tamil school in the state had allegedly involved its Parent-Teacher Association to get parents to receiving the aid to use part of it to pay for their children's fees for computer classes.

On another matter, he said the minsitry had provided a RM27 million allocation to overcome water supply problems in schools in Kelantan as 77 schools in the state were facing supply problems with 39 of them in dire need of  clean water supply.

In Kuala Lumpur, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom, speaking to reporters after opening the ‘Malay Archipelago Seminar - Islam in Southeast Asia: Challenges and Hope’ at the Putra World Trade Centre, urged police to act fast on the matter as it was a very sensitive issue.
