Guan Eng: There were no plans to sabotage PM
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has denied allegations that the party has arranged supporters to embarrass Prime Minister Najib Razak at the BN's Chinese New Year open house on Monday in Penang.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has denied allegations that the party has arranged supporters to embarrass Prime Minister Najib Razak at the BN's Chinese New Year open house on Monday in Penang.
"Do you mean to say that Najib shared his script - Are you ready for BN? - with the people beforehand?" asked Lim, who is Penang chief minister.
"How do we know what Najib wanted to say?
"So were Pakatan Rakyat supporters also involved in top Korean superstar Psy's refusal to toss the yee sang with the PM?" he queried.
Lim ( left ) was asked to comment on state BN chief Teng Chang Yeow's allegation that the DAP had sabotaged the BN event held at Han Chiang College on Monday morning, which featured Psy performing his world hit 'Oppa Gangnam Style' twice on stage.
In attendance were Najib, his wife Rosmah Mansor, their two children, many BN leaders, including former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and ministers Koh Tsu Koon and Ng Yen Yen.
Yes and no
In his speech, Najib had asked the 30,000-odd crowd if they were ready for Psy, to which they unanimously answered with a loud 'Yes".
However, when Najib asked if they were ready for BN, the crowd gave a resounding 'No' although some shouted 'Yes' - mostly those with 'I Love PM' banners.
Psy did not join Najib and his collegues on stage for the
yee sang
toss
as it was not part of his programme.
But a video clip which went viral on social networking site Facebook showed BN leaders looking lost and unorganised while the emcee continued to scream and plead for the performer to join them.
Many of the participants at the concert also wore the three colours that Lim had suggested - yellow for Bersih, green for the environment and red for change, which prompted the BN to allege that there was 'sabotage' involved that day.
However, those who wore those shades, including Bersih yellow T-shirts, were scattered across the field, while many wore red, including Umno members as it is their party colour.
"We didn't organise any groups. If we had the money to organise such a thing, we would have invited Psy to perform," said Lim, who attended the DAP Chinese New Year open house celebration in Relau.
"Please be logical, do not simply attack (us). I feel I do not want to talk about this. Let the people judge as those who were there on the field that day can tell. It was very clear that the people were not ready for BN".
Double standards on Valentine's Day
Meanwhile, Lim denied that he said Psy had agreed to perform in Penang because it was governed by a CAT (competent, accountable and transparent) administration.
He added that he had said at a DAP's CNY do on Tuesday, that Psy was brought in to perform in Penang because Pakatan controls the state and had a two-thirds majority in the state legislative assembly.
"Why did they bring Psy (
right
) to Penang and not to Johor or Pahang, his own home state? Why did they bring him to Penang, a Pakatan state? Because we control two-thirds majority here," he had said at the event held at the Penang Times Square.
"When we have a two-thirds majority, the people they will receive beautiful gifts like Psy's performance," he had jested then.
In another development, Lim said that critics, including MCA-controlled English language daily The Star , applied double standards when criticising PAS on its Valentine's Day stand.
"Jakim (Islamic Development Department) also warned Muslims not to partake in Valentine's Day celebrations. However, they are not criticised for it like PAS," he said.
"Do not play double standards. The Star tries to slander and play racial issues when it comes to PAS," he added.
"Valentine's Day is not a religious event, just a custom, it is up to people to observe it or not".
